Ty Powdwr - THE Hut
|
|
Ty Powdwr is the KMC's most prized asset. Certainly one of the best
equipped mountain huts in the UK, Ty Powdwr is located near the village
of Dinorwig, overlooking Llanberis and has views out to Snowdon and Anglesey.
It is available to affiliate clubs of the BMC and to genuine educational
establishments.

Some history
Ty Powdwr, as the name suggests, was originally the black powder store for
the miners who blasted a large fraction of a mountain to free the slates
that were one of the most common roofing materials in the 19th Century.
Many men died in the process and anyway got only 1% of the mountain
onto roofs. Mining stopped during the 1960's as cheaper, better quality
slate began to arrive from Spain and China.
When the KMC purchased it over 25 years ago, Ty Powdwr was virtually
a solid blockhouse, surrounded by blast walls and with no windows. Over
the first 10 years members laboured in horrible conditions to provide electricity,
gas, water and sewerage. Over the next 15 years or so, various bits were
finished off and finally, the hut was developed from end to end. In subsequent
years though, the members responsible for the building have continued to
upgrade in the light of experience and new technology, reducing our energy
bills from over £1500/ year to just over £600.

Facilities
Ty Powdwr has room for up to 17 people for weekend bookings (or 23 people mid-week). There are two
mixed dormitories available for outside bookings. As you can see from the
pictures, we have a large (10 metre x 10 metre) Kitchen, as well as a lounge.
There are showers and toilets as well.
Being North Wales (= cold and often very wet), we have a drying room
as well.
Ty Powdwr is within walking distance of Llanberis, and 20 minutes from
Bangor or Caernarfon.
How to book it
The hut is available for bookings by climbing clubs and other recognised organisations.
