Karabiner Mountaineering Club

Lectures, Talks and Slide Shows 2011

Over the winter season the KMC hosts a series of lectures, talks and slideshows. The talks are given by a mixture of club members and external speakers.

RIFT VALLEY RAMBLES – PEAK BAGGING IN EAST AFRICA

by Michelle Harvie and Mark Garrod

This will be held at 8 p.m. on Thursday February 24th 2011. At The Britons Protection.

The first indoor meet of 2011 is a slideshow covering a number of East Africa’s better and lesser-known mountains.

The first half will be a fairly quick trek round Kilimanjaro, Mt Kenya, Mt Meru, and two lesser but no less interesting peaks; Sapitwa and Ol Doinyo Lengai.

The second half is a more in-depth trip wading through and up the Mountains of the Moon (Rwenzori), complete with man-eating bogs, rainfall to put Capel Curig to shame, and topped by glaciers and rocky peaks. Close encounters with mountain gorillas might also get a look in.

The talk starts at 8pm prompt, with a £3 entrance fee with profits going to the club.

For those who haven’t been there, the Britons Protection is the new club meeting place on the first Thursday on each month, and is at 50, Great Bridgewater Street, just down from the Bridgewater Hall.

The talk will be held upstairs.

If you're really keen, you may also want to have a quick look back at the 2009/2010 lectures
