Climber defies ban - And he's not alone
Top climber Bowden Black turned up at Wilton Quarries, off Belmont
Road, last night to defy a climbing ban.
But he was not alone. Half a dozen other climbers joined him in
scaling quarry crags.
Mr Black, 43, owner of a Bolton climbing equipment shop, knew that
police had already sent off other climbers after the ban by Bolton
Waterworks Department. The ban followed a climbing accident three
weeks ago.
Tired and panting after a gruelling 85ft climb up one of the quarries
most difficult ascents, he said, "I intend climbing here despite the
ban."
This week a waterworks spokesman said, "people who climb at Wilton
are trespassing on private land."
Among the climbers who joined in the protest were Brian Monk, 17, of
Richard Birch Street: Stephen Brooks, 17, of Carlton Street, Bury,
and Alan Driver, 17, of Haig Road Bury. All the boys are pupils at
Bury's Derby School.
"We think the ban's ridiculous." Said Alan, "There's only been one
serious accident in 20 years." Said Brian, "We don't think it's
dangerous."
