July 1998 Newsletter Forthcoming Meets

All note the following small print when taking part in meets :-

"I accept that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a risk of personal injury or death. I am aware of and shall accept these risks and wish to participate in these activities voluntarily and shall be responsible for my own actions and involvement."

Jul 18-19: Climbing - Cader Idris: B Anderson

This will be a camping meet based at Mrs Thomas's site immediately adjacent to the car park at GR 698 152. From the centre of Dolgellau head west on a minor road for 200 yards then branch left onto another minor road (signed Cader Idris on wall) Pass the Gwernan Lake Hotel (bar and bar meals) to car park 1/2 mile further on. Camp in field immediately behind the car park (signed Thomas Camping).

Loads of slab routes on Cyfrwy up to VS with good harder routes (HVS upwards) on Pencoed Pillar on south side of mountain (Craig Cau).

My intention is to make the meet a sort of memorial to Bowden Black who put up two excellent routes on Cyfrwy in 1951.

Jul 25-26: Ty Powdyr: N Maddison

Norah plans to have a classic climbing weekend at the hut. She will be providing baked cakes in exchange for climbing partners who accompany her on classic mountain routes. She would welcome a full hut as she plans to do lots of routes and usually tires out her partners quite quickly.

She has learnt from bitter experience that most of the KMC men just don't have the staying power, and so needs many in reserve. She informs me she has started baking already. Get your order in now while the ovens are being fired up.

Aug 1-2: Ullswater Long Walk: V Castick

This Spectacular walk through some of the finest scenery in the Lake District is one not to he missed. Based at Glenridding, the walk will start and finish in Pooley Bridge. The route will take in High Street, Red Screes, Fairfield, Helvellyn and the Dodds.

There are many escape points if you don't want to do the full 35 miles. An alternative walk around Ullswater is also possible at a lower level and only 20 miles, all on paths, no road walking.

The walk will be fully supported by my faithful team of sherpas. Accommodation will be in a bunkhouse in Glenridding if sufficient numbers request it, otherwise there are several campsites.

Write the date in your diary now so that you can start training immediately.

Wednesday Aug 5th: Garden Party: Roy Lee

from 7.30pm onwards.

You are all cordially invited to Roy and Ivy Lee's garden party. Bring some food and some drink and enjoy a balmy summer's evening in their superb grounds.

Aug 8-9: Ty Powdyr FRCC joint meet: B Anderson

This is the annual joint meet with the FRCC. Come and support it, climb with a new partner or just do a bit of socialising, remember we have the use of their 5 huts in the lakes so getting to know a few of their members will make staying in their huts more enjoyable.

Aug 15-16: Ty Powdyr - family meet: The Goodwins

The usual mayhem Family free for all, baby sitters available for anyone wanting to get out, and children type entertainer on demand (Vinny).

Aug 22-23: Yorkshire Limestone - Walking, Camping, Climbing: Neville McMillan

Note change of venue

This is a meet to suit everyone. Camping at GR763676 halfway between Settle and

Ingleton, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. For those with the old OS map, it's not a hospital any longer; it's a campsite (bunkhouse accommodation also available) and outdoor centre, and there is a bar on the site. The campsite provides easy access along the A65 to Ingleborough, the three peaks and many other excellent walking options. For climbers, it is central to Twistleton, Crummackdale, Oxenber, Pot Scar and Attermire Scar. Perverts may prefer Malham or Gordale Scar, but I won't be with them. And anyone wishing to shade their sensitive skin from the intense UV radiation coming through the hole in the ozone layer can disappear down a cave. So all tastes can be catered for.

If enough people commit themselves in advance, we can book what used to be the hospital lawn (big lawn) for exclusive KMC use. (Do any members have a croquet set?) The Dalesbridge Centre also mentioned the possibility of providing a group barbecue, if we cross their palms with silver.

Please let me know if you are intending to come, whether you would like a barbecue, etc., so that I can make a group booking.

Aug 28-30: BH Arran: Andrew Croughton

A limited number of places are available in bunkhouse accommodation on Arran from Friday night August 28 , anybody interested in taking advantage of this chance to climb on Arran, should let me know ASAP as a deposit has to be paid to secure places.

The price is £5.50 a head , per night and is limited to 8 places, so if you are interested in spending the bank holiday on this magnificent island, which offers excellent opportunities for climbing and walking, with the added bonus of a midge free place to eat and sleep ,contact me straight.

Accommodation is self catering and once numbers of interested parties are known I will try and get people together to sort out transport and ferry times to the island, so give me a ring as soon as you can.

Sep 6: Climbing at the Roaches: Mary Stuart

Mary will be holding an all nighter on the main buttress of the upper tier. All welcome, with grades in abundence for all seasons. Free issue head torch and flares, with possible style councilling for the needy. A meet not to be missed, guaranteed to be something to amuse even the most stoic members of the human race. (89% chance of party on Saturday night.)

Sept 13: Mountain Biking - Hebdon Bridge: Ian Bennett

The route I intend to do starts from the Public Car Park in the middle of Hebden Bridge. I think there's only 1 and the GR for the start is 994 272. We will meet at 10:30am and set off shortly afterwards.

This is a great little route that will take approx 2.5 hours to complete. If people want to extend the route there are always possibilities but we can decide that on the day. The route covers a lot of different territory with a whole variety of surfaces for novices and experts alike. The views are spectacular and there is very little on-road. As far as I'm aware there aren't any bike shops in Hebden Bridge to hire bikes from but if people want to go and there is enough demand we may be able to sort out some bikes from somewhere. See you there. Phone Ian if you want a bike.

Sept 20th: Yorkshire Dales Walk: Iain McCallum

This walk climbs Whernside along the length of its ridge then drops down to the road at Kingsdale Head. It returns over Green Hill and Gragareth. It can easily be extended to take in Great Coum and Crag hill or shortened to climbing Whernside on its own. Start/finish: Ingleton** - Park at the main car park.

Route: Ingleton - Scar End - Ewes Top Moss - Ellerbeck - Bruntscar - Whernside(736m) - High Moss - Foul Moss - Greenhill(626m) - Gragareth(627m) - Dodson's Hill Turbary Road - Ingleton. Distance 14/15 miles.

Meet at 9.1 5am for a 9.30am start. ** (It may be possible to park nearer to Scar End thus shortening the walk by about two miles - details later). Map:O.S. Outdoor Leisure 2 Yorkshire Dales - Western Area.

Sept 26-27: Working Party: Dave Wylie

There's still a while to go before this working party, so plans have not been finalised. The most likely things we'll be doing are cutting the new doorway through into the Ladies washroom (now that the new lintel is in place) and finishing off in the kitchen (more paint on the walls etc.). If there's time, we might even make a start putting the new loo into the Ladies.

Anybody who wants to contribute is most welcome to come along. See me in the pub on a Thursday beforehand, or phone me to check up on any last minute details.

Cheers, Dave Wylie (Hut Manager)

Nov 1-2: Borrowdale, Lakes: Michelle Harvie

Michelle has booked the Salving House, Rosthwaite in Borrowdale. This lovely Fell and Rock hut happens to be near a pub and lots of superb hills. Bliss. This is advance notice so you can get booked in early, to catch the Indian Summer.
