September 1998 Newsletter Forthcoming Meets
All note the following small print when taking part in meets :-
"I accept that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a risk of personal injury or death. I am aware of and shall
accept these risks and wish to participate in these activities voluntarily and shall be responsible for my own actions and
involvement."
Sept 13th: Mountain Biking - Hebden Bridge: Ian Bennett
The route I intend to do starts from the Public Car Park in the middle of Hebden Bridge. I think there's only 1 and the GR for the start is 994 272. We will meet at 10:30am and set off shortly afterwards.
This is a great little route that will take approx 2.5 hours to complete. If people want to extend the route there are always possibilities but we can decide that on the day. The route covers a lot of different territory with a whole variety of surfaces for novices and experts alike. The views are spectacular and there is very little on-road. As far as I'm aware there aren't any bike shops in Hebden Bridge to hire bikes from but if people want to go and there is enough demand we may be able to sort out some bikes from somewhere. See you there. Phone Ian if you want a bike.
Sept 20th: Yorkshire Dales Walk: Iain McCallum
This walk climbs Whernside along the length of its ridge then drops down to the road at Kingsdale Head. It returns over Green Hill and Gragareth. It can easily be extended to take in Great Coum and Crag hill or shortened to just climbing Whernside.
Start/finish: Twistleton Lane, Kingsdale at the junction with the Thornton to Dent road (GR. 692760) - NB. NOT INGLETON AS STATED IN PREVIOUS NEWSLETTER Parking at this point is rather limited but it is possible to park alongside the road before reaching Twistleton Lane at GR. 691758 - in or near a lay-by opposite a small quarry.
Route: Twistleton Lane - Scar End - North Green - West Fell - Bruntscar - Whernside(736m) - High Moss - Foul Moss - Greenhill(626m) - Gragareth(627m) - Dodson's Hill - Turbary Road - Twistleton Lane. Distance 12 miles
Meet at 9.15am for a 9.30am start. Map:O.S. Outdoor Leisure 2 Yorkshire Dales - Western Area.
Sept 26th - 27th: Working Party, Ty Powdwr: Dave Wylie
There's still a while to go before this working party, so plans have not been finalised. The most likely things we'll be doing are cutting the new doorway through into the Ladies washroom (now that the new lintel is in place) and finishing off in the kitchen (more paint on the walls etc.). If there's time, we might even make a start putting the new loo into the Ladies.
There will be plenty of cleaning, painting and general maintenance jobs to occupy a number of people, so anybody who wants to contribute is most welcome to come along. See me in the pub on a Thursday beforehand, or phone me to check up on any last minute details.
Oct 4th; Laddow Rocks: Ken Betham
This is a traditional crag right from the earliest gritstone days. In fact, most northern pioneers have succumbed to its embraces. The KMC always seem to have enjoyed going and I hope to see many of you there where tea will be available from in my case around 11 am. onwards. CRAG Map Ref. is Dark Peak 057015,
A volunteer would be assured of a days friendship if he or she would help carry up the water, as nowadays it seems to weigh a bit heavier. As my memory is a little unreliable these days will someone check at the car park that I have got the stove and its other bits as one year it was left in the boot.
For the uninitiated there are climbs of all grades up to hard VS, but also there are quite a lot of superb V.Diffs. and Severes. Take the Woodhead Road as far as the Crowden YH. Car Park M.R.073 994 Crag is in Left Hand corner towards Holme Moss. Another approach is from the Chew Valley car park M.R.013035 and up the road. Either way you have about 3/4 of an hours pleasant up, with virtually a guarantee of no queues.
Oct 11th: Llangollen Walk: Peter Walker
Maps. Pathfinder 806 (SJ 24/34) Llangollen and Wrexham South, or Lanranger 117 Chester.
Chris Thickett has kindly agreed to lead the meet, so that Peter Walker can run in the Manchester Marathon.
Approaching the town by the A539 you will find the car park on the left, by the river, just before the town bridge. Ref 218421. Meet in time for a 9:30 am start. About 13/14 miles of easy walking but lots of interest. Suitable for wives, grannies etc. Can be lengthened by adding a loop to the north west.
Three climbing crags en route. Anyone climbing here is on the meet.
The route takes in Dinas Bran Castle (a great viewpoint) then the old quarries above Trevor, crag number 1, lots of routes. Continues along the edges of Eglwseg Mountain and takes in the undistinguished summit bump before descending through the woods to World's End (Yn Dor Manor House) and crag 2, Craig Y Forwen. Along the Offa's Dyke path beneath the overhangs of crag 3, Carig Arthur. Returning to Llangollen via Vale Crucis Abbey, the Pillar of Eliseg and the canal tow path.
Chris has ten pages of history notes form the internet for anyone interested. Route sampled by Jim and Sandy - verdict: a bit short and easy but very interesting.
P.S. Car break-ins do occur in the area. Leave nothing in your cars, open the glove compartment to prove it is empty, leave parcel shelves at home, etc.
Oct 17th - 18th: Ty Powdwr: Brian Street
Brian is currently enjoying himself and Michelle in a far flung part of the globe. I suspect this will be a classic hut meet as It's his birthday. More Details Later.
Oct 25th: Walk: Frank Williams
This is expected to be a Sunday walk of classic proportions, entertaining for all. Frank will be supplying details nearer the time. Keep your ears to the ground.
Oct 31st - Nov 1st: Salving House, Rosthwaite Borrowdale, Lakes: Michelle Harvie
Autumn in Borrowdale provides plenty of walking, climbing, running ,cycling ,swimming, photography, and even a pub across the road. (You don't need your bucket and spade, Andy and Dave !) I have booked 14 places in the Fell and Rock hut at £3.00/night. If you want more information or to book, see me in the pub on Thursday nights.
Nov 7th - 8th: Ty Powdwr Bonfire night: The KMC
There may will be some surprise entertainment this year, possibly in the form of a bonfire, fire works, bobbing apples and treacle toffee. But then who knows.
Nov 14th - 15th: The Annual Dinner, The Royal Victoria Hotel: The KMC
The annual dinner this year, can be found in Wales. Make the most of the Hut. See notice earlier in this edition of wonderfully crafted thingamajigs.
Nov 22nd: Bouldering Competition: Joanne Goodwin
In Mancheter-ish. The venue will be kept secret and routes will be kept secret. The meet leader will also be kept under wraps and can't be bribed. (Ed. I don't know anything else). All grade catered for, with a projectile handicap system in action. All welcome and all will be encouraged. Vinny and Joanne are acting as intermediaries and will provide more info if pressed.
Nov 28th - 29th: Working Party, Ty Powdwr: Dave Wylie
This will involve anything left over from the last working do. Such as the Ladies New Loo. Get yourself down and try it out for size. Rumour has it the New Loo concept involves the implementation of the much flaunted Looinsky Report. In addition it will probably involve a lot of elbow grease if the previous meet didn't get the full quota of scrubbers and court hangers on.
Dec 6th: Kettleshulme Walk: Len & Ken
** VOLUNTEER WANTED**
The Kettleshulme meet on December 6th will certainly need a leader for the fuller walk down to me. After yet another birthday there is no way that I can lead a walk that would satisfy the youngers and middles. Last year Lorna kindly helped out but finding the way over the local stileage is not everyones cup of tea. However all that is traditional is not of necessity earmarked for the meets wastebin, especially at this time of the year. So some form of bung will be payable to the volunteer. Negotiable of course.
I cannot guarantee olympic qualification but may be able to lead a minor circuit liesurely no doubt to the joy of others?. All I ask is that any member taking the job remembers that most of the people who turn up dont want gutting and like a pub stop at some time during the day, also coffee late morning requires a location not in a swamp. To satisfy me of your humanities, map reading capabilitiy and bull fighting potential. In the meantime the walk starts from Len Stubbs Kettleshulme bungalow at 9-30 Early morning tea etc will be available from around 8-30 am. Park with care etc. Usual rules apply.
Ken Beetham
Dec 12th - 13th: Christmas KMC Bash: The KMC
Usual Welsh Sunshine and Frolics. The providing of food, music and spectators should allow all the out going members to strut their stuff. Please ensure all sequins are properly secured this year, as it makes less mess for the cleaners. Lots of pudding and pie makers will be required, as well as a few cunning stunt co-ordinators and prestidigitatorous types.
Dec 19th - 20th: All yours
Dec 26th - 27th: Christmas recovery
