October 1999 Forthcoming Meets

All note the following small print when taking part in meets :-

"I accept that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a risk of personal injury or death. I am aware of and shall accept these risks and wish to participate in these activities voluntarily and shall be responsible for my own actions and involvement."

October 3rd - Yorkshire Dales Walk - Iain McCallum

I hope you will join me on this fine walk through the Dales. It has plenty of variety and there are many points of interest. It also incorporates a section of the Pennine Way. Distance about 15 miles.

Route:

Malham Tarn - Tennant Gill - Fountains Fell - Litton - Arncliffe - Monk's Road - Dew Bottoms - Middle House Farm - Malham Tarn.

Meet at 9.30 for a 9.45am. start - in the car park near to where the stream from Malham Tarn crosses the road (GR 894 658).

Best maps OS Outdoor - Leisure Sheets 10 & 30.

Refreshments are available from pubs in both Litton and Anicliffe.

October 9th-10th - Ty Powdyr-Joint Meet Metrop. Univ (prov) - Brian Street

Come on down to the hut for a feast of climbing walking and mountaineering.

October 17th - (Alt) Kentmere Walk - Linda Batey

Map: The English Lakes SE Area, Outdoor Leisure 7.

Meet at Kentmere Church SD 457 041. Start time 10:00am

Kentmere is one of the quieter Lakeland valleys and is the starting point of one of Lakelands classic walks, the Kentmere horseshoe. The walk that we will do will be weather and enthusiasm dependent. It will be either the classic Kentmere horseshoe from Kentmere taking in Ill Bell, High Street, Mardale Ill Bell, Harter fell, Kentmere Pike and back to Kentmere, or a curcuit from Kentmere taking in Kentmere Pike, Harter fell, Longsleddale and back to Kentmere. There is an extensive network of bridlepaths in the area, some of which have interesting ascents/descents. So there is lots of potential for an alternative mountain biking circuit. Mountain bikes can be hired in Staveley village. I will provide details nearer the time to anyone who is interested.

October 16th-17th - "Ice" Climbing at Dover - Al Metelko

This is a meet for beginners as well as expert to practise ‘Ice Climbing’ in relative comfort, short walk-ins and well last year it was sunny and we where climbing in T-shirts.

I don’t recommend you using your brand new Charlet Moser technical axes but do bring your old ones, crampons with mono points are best. Basically bring whatever you use to climb winter routes and the only essential equipment are helmet, plastic or stiff leather boots and harness. I will be bringing a couple of pairs of axes and set of crampons for general use.

I expect to only top rope routes, get the feel of the place, on the Saturday and those wishing to lead a route later in the weekend do so at their own risk. Chances are we will be top roping all weekend and it does give you a chance to do those overhangs you never dared do on the Ben.

I would like to make a request to club members (whether they are coming or not) to lend the meet Warthogs or similar drive in gear. This gear should be clearly marked so that it can be returned.

Numbers will determine whether a caravan should be hired for the weekend. Remember: no interest no meet.

After practising ice climbing at Dover it seems only sensible to organise a session, in November, at a Lancashire quarry and try out some dry tooling (hooking and torqueing). This should cover most of the techniques required for a good winter season to come!!

October 23rd-24th - The Annual Dinner - Shap Wells Hotel - The Committee

The annual dinner is being held at the Shap Wells hotel this year, on Saturday October 23rd. The hotel is, strangely enough, just off the A6 about 3-4 miles from Shap. We haven’t used this hotel for a while for our dinner, but the Fell and Rock do use it regularly, and there is plenty of room both for our dinner / disco, and also in terms of rooms.

Dinner price has been fixed at ONLY FIFTEEN POUNDS, which is very close to the true per head cost, with the club funding guests.

The guest speaker is Andy McNae, a well-known BMC chappy, and the Right Hon. Dr. Mary Stuart will be replying on behalf of the KMC.

The menu choice is:

Starters:

- Fruit Platter, Crispy bacon salad, Carrot and coriander soup

Main Courses:

- Beef bourguignon, Roast Monkfish and Parma ham, Stuffed aubergine (veg)

Desserts:

- Bread & Butter pudding, Tricolore chocolate terrine, Fresh fruit salad, Cheese and

biscuits

When booking your place with me, please give me your choice of starter and main course. Dessert choice is made on the night.

Cash or cheques (IOU’s not accepted) will secure your place - I’m not available (on hols Sept 30th - Oct 10th).

When I’m off, either Andrew Croughton, or Chris Williamson, will be delighted to accept your bookings, provided you give or send the money, and tell them your choice of starter and main course.

Accommodation:

1. SHAP WELLS HOTEL (TEL 01931-716628, FAX 716377), SHAP, PENRITH, CUMBRIA, CA10 3QU.

All hotel rooms have en-suite facilities, television, baby listening, and tea & coffee facilities.

Single rooms are more expensive at £36 for B&B, so best to team up with your best buddy and pay £28 per person for double / twin. Children under 13 sharing with adults pay £7 - or get their folks to stump up.

When ordering, please mention you are with the KMC, otherwise you may get charged full rate. The rates given can be applied to nights either side of the weekend to extend it if you wish. Given the number of rooms available, I haven’t block reserved any for the KMC.

Copies of hotel bumph from me on request, or from them, of course.

LOCAL B&B, BUNKHOUSE AND CAMPING

This is available in Shap village, 3-4 miles from the hotel. The Crown Inn does all 3, with B&B at £18.50 per person, bunkhouse at £5.50 (10 people), and camping at £3.50. Campers get hot showers, bunkhouse users get hot showers, need to take their own sleeping bag for beds, and no cooking facilities provided apart from a socket (take a kettle?). Both campers and bunkers can pre-order breakfast in the Inn if wanted.

If interested, contact Pam or Brian on 01931-716229, who are aware they are being "advertised".

Of course a gentle jog back to Shap at 3am is not everyone’s idea of pleasure, so I have a contact number and names for the local taxi firm, who tell me they might be able to do late night / early morning trips from hotel to Shap using anything up to their 14 seater minibus. Prices will have to be sorted with them - suggest you leave it till you / we know how many people might be interested, and go for 1 big deal.

Taxi firm is in Crosby Ravensworth, tel 01931-716212, talk to Helen or Keith, who again know they may be getting strange phone calls.

CAMPING IN THE HOTEL GROUNDS

The hotel dont mind dinner attendees camping in a field near the hotel, but stress there are no facilities at all, and that it is used for clay-pigeon shooting on Sunday morning - you have been warned. I’m not sure exactly where the field is, nor it’s condition, but would ask that if you use this option, negotiate access to someone’s room for ablutions, rather than use the croquet lawn. I’m told there is one loo and basin for general use somewhere in the hotel.

Hopefully that should meet most peoples’ needs.

Mark Garrod

PS Any offers - prizes needed for the raffle at the dinner - to Peter Walker please.

October 31st - Forest of Bowland Walk - Pat Holt & Derek Seddon

The meet starts at The Hey Farm, Newton - in - Bowland, nr Clitheroe, BB7 3EE by 9:30am. If we run out of parking space we can use the farm yard just down the lane. I have ordered very much better weather than last time and hope for a big turnout. A few of the old ex members are coming for the meal after the walk which will be around 5/6pm.

Derek is organising the walk which wont be to arduous - if we get a good day the views are superb.

November 6th-7th - Ty Powdyr, Bonfire Meet - The KMC

Bring down anything that burns and make this an explosive weekend.

November 14th - Mountain Biking - Ian Bennett

As is reasonably traditional I will be leading a mountain biking meet this year, to appeal to the ever increasing number of KMC members who own a mountain bike. I will keep it fairly local and show you some of the brilliant trails near my house. We will meet up just off junction 22 of the M62 by the communications mast, and hopefully tea wagon, at 10 o’clock. To get there turn right towards Saddleworth and at the top of the hill there is a large lay-by next to the road. When everybody gets there I will canvas opinion on how hard people want the route to be and we will make sure it suits everybody. See you there for a day on great trails, and hopefully sunshine.

November 21st - Walk, Southern Pennines - Keith Williams

Anglezarke, Turton and Winter Hill

Meet 09.15 to depart 09.30 at Leicester Mill quarry car park (SD 621161) overlooking Anglezarke Reservoir. (This is best approached from the south by leaving the M61 at J6 then north on the A6 into Adlington. Turn R at a mini-roundabout into Railway Rd., straight cross the A673 at traffic lights and up to Traveller’s Rest pub. Bearing R, cross over M61 then immediately L. Follow this lane past The Yewtree after 1km, over dam then along east side of reservoir until fork is reached. Keep L, then L again after 100m into entrance to CP which at the top of a steep drive.)

The proposed route approaches Anglezarke Moor via Leadmines Clough which is followed on to Redmond’s Edge then north to Gt. Hill. Dropping east down to the Belmont road then briefly up the Tockholes road to sharp L turn. Short and longer alternative routes are possible here to reach Belmont (Dog Inn for lunch?) then south off the A675 past Spring Res. on to the top of Winter Hill. From the trig point descend north to Hordern Stoops then descend back to Leadmines Clough via the Hempshaw’s and Simms farms.

Distance: 12/15 miles depending on route variation. Alternatively, there is climbing at Leicester Mill and Wilton quarries nearby or a little further afield, Hoghton (Tower) Quarry and even a wall at Cliff’s Barn in Mawdesley east of Chorley.

November 28th - Local Fell Run - Winter Warmer - Craig Marsden

The run will start from the public carpark across the road from Edale train station. Don’t forget your change for the pay and display!!! The title of the run is a winter warmer so the run will take in assortment of brooks, towers, chairs, ladders, tors and booths designed to get you warm early on. The run will be about 7 to 8 miles, but there will be the possibility of a shorter circuit for those prone to cramp or other such ailments!!!

December 5th - Kettleshulme - Len Stubbs and Walk Leader

To Kettleshulme along the A6 road to Whaley Bridge, turn right at the trafic lights to Kettleshulme 2 miles. Park in Paddock Lane. Please don’t obstruct any private drives. Phil Ramsbottom will lead the Walk. Choice of pubs for Lunch, the Bee-Hive in Combs, the Highwayman above Rainow or Cat and Fiddle. All good walking country. Tea and coffee available from 8:30am onwards

Len Stubbs

A walk will take place from 1 Paddock Close, Kettleshulme starting at 9:30am prompt. Who will be leading it I know not, but I will assist with suggestions for same if a volunteer will step forward. As usual tea will be to hand for early risers from 8:30am onwards, Food and drink will as if by miracle appear assuming my good friend can make the necessary arrangements. Bring torches, which often get forgotten to the extreme discomfort of the individual. Any walk should be around 12 miles for most, 18 miles for Jim if he comes and 8 or 9 for me if I am still here. So lets have a good turnout just before the last Xmas prior to the famous millenium. Please park carefully on the lane, for newcomers its opposite ‘THE BULL’ where base camp will be assembled no doubt around noon. All are welcome whether walking or not.

Ken Beetham.

December 11th - Bouldering Competition - Rob Allen

The venue for this year’s event was a closely held secret. Rob has now announced that the competition will be held on Saturday December 11th 1999 at the Burbage South Boulders. Meet at the Surprise View car park at 11:30am.

December 18th-19th - Ty Powdyr, Christmas Bash - TBA

THE 1999 CHRISTMAS BASH - MEAL ORGANISERS AND GAMES MASTERS NOW SOUGHT

The Christmas bash is on Dec 18th, at Ty Powdyr of course.

We are looking for volunteers to help with organising the nosh, remembering that the key is delegation - getting cookers is no issue, getting people to do the asking and arranging is what we need. Michelle has already volunteered to be involved.

The entertainment for the Sat afternoon, normally games, also needs organising - games mistresses and masters sought.

Thanks in advance for your support (on behalf of the club).

Mark Garrod

Outdoor Meets Secretary.
