December 1999 Forthcoming Meets

All note the following small print when taking part in meets :-

"I accept that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a risk of personal injury or death. I am aware of and shall accept these risks and wish to participate in these activities voluntarily and shall be responsible for my own actions and involvement."

November 21st - Walk, Southern Pennines - Keith Williams

Anglezarke, Turton and Winter Hill

Meet 09.15 to depart 09.30 at Leicester Mill quarry car park (SD 621161) overlooking Anglezarke Reservoir. (This is best approached from the south by leaving the M61 at J6 then north on the A6 into Adlington. Turn R at a mini-roundabout into Railway Rd., straight cross the A673 at traffic lights and up to Traveller's Rest pub. Bearing R, cross over M61 then immediately L. Follow this lane past The Yewtree after 1km, over dam then along east side of reservoir until fork is reached. Keep L, then L again after 100m into entrance to CP which at the top of a steep drive.)

The proposed route approaches Anglezarke Moor via Leadmines Clough which is followed on to Redmond's Edge then north to Gt. Hill. Dropping east down to the Belmont road then briefly up the Tockholes road to sharp L turn. Short and longer alternative routes are possible here to reach Belmont (Dog Inn for lunch?) then south off the A675 past Spring Res. on to the top of Winter Hill. From the trig point descend north to Hordern Stoops then descend back to Leadmines Clough via the Hempshaw's and Simms farms.

Distance: 12/15 miles depending on route variation. Alternatively, there is climbing at Leicester Mill and Wilton quarries nearby or a little further afield, Hoghton (Tower) Quarry and even a wall at Cliff's Barn in Mawdesley east of Chorley.

November 28th - Local Fell Run, Winter Warmer - Craig Marsden

The run will start from the public carpark across the road from Edale train station. Don't forget your change for the pay and display!!! The title of the run is a winter warmer so the run will take in assortment of brooks, towers, chairs, ladders, tors and booths designed to get you warm early on. The run will be about 7 to 8 miles, but there will be the possibility of a shorter circuit for those prone to cramp or other such ailments!!!

December 5th - Kettleshulme - Len Stubbs and Walk Leader

To Kettleshulme along the A6 road to Whaley Bridge, turn right at the trafic lights to Kettleshulme 2 miles. Park in Paddock Lane. Please don't obstruct any private drives. Phil Ramsbottom will lead the Walk. Choice of pubs for Lunch, the Bee-Hive in Combs, the Highwayman above Rainow or Cat and Fiddle. All good walking country. Tea and coffee available from 8:30am onwards

Ken Beetham says the walk will take place from 1 Paddock Close, Kettleshulme starting at 9:30am prompt. Bring torches, which often get forgotten to the extreme discomfort of the individual. So lets have a good turnout just before the last Xmas prior to the famous millenium. Please park carefully on the lane, for newcomers its opposite 'THE BULL' where base camp will be assembled no doubt around noon. All are welcome whether walking or not.

December 11th - Bouldering Competition - Rob Allen

The venue for this year’s event was a closely held secret. Rob has now announced that the competition will be held on Saturday December 11th 1999 at the Burbage South Boulders. Meet at the Surprise View car park at 11:30am.

December 18th-19th - Ty Powdyr, Christmas Bash - Michelle Harvie

'The last Christmas bash before the next one in the year 2000'

I have volunteered to organise this years festivities, i.e. delegate the work to other people. I will need about 12, willing/ able chefs/chefettes; 6 to cook main courses, and 6 to create desserts, and people to help on the day. We will need plenty of hearty fodder for those hungry KMC mountaineers who have endured a hard day orienteering around B & Q, or the Trafford Centre. Andy is organising the afternoon games. It has been rumoured that a professional female may be appearing in the tug of war competition, but don't be intimidated by this. I propose to rerun the successful caption competition. Bring along photos of KMC action or inactivity, there will be prizes for the best captions. The cost of the dinner will be £6.00 in advance. Any profit will go to a suitable charity. To book a place see myself or Mark down the Crown & Anchor.

January 8th-9th - Sobering Up Meet at Ty Powdyr - Chris Thickett

On Saturday, I hope to lead a point-to-point walk, perhaps on the Carnedds and on Sunday I will be going scrambling or even climbing. The details are secret at the moment - even from me! You can come along and do whatever you want as long as it's legal.

In the evening there will be plenty of time for intellectual discourse to keep us laughing. Oh! With reference to the name of the meet - well in order to sober up then first you have to get ....

January 16th - Grizedale Forest Sculpture Trail - Frank Williams

Meet at 9.15am for 9.30 start. Car Park at the Grizedale Forest Visitor Centre. South from Hawkshead. (GR 335 945 on the SE lakes 1:25000 sheet).

There's a route of about ten miles called the Silurian Way round the Grizedale Forest, calling at the Eagle's Head at Satterthwaite at mid-day could make it a twelve miler depending on the weather.

The Sculpture Project was established in 1977 and sculptors-in-residence have been producing work in the forest since then. The works include the impressive "Sidewinder " and "Taking a wall for a walk" by Andy Goldsworthy, the "Stone Forest" by Kimio Tsuchiya, and Emma Posey's "Omphalos" all of which have to be searched for in the forest. There must be some fifty sculptures or more on the trail. It all makes a walk with a difference. Wildlife includes red deer, roe deer, foxes, badgers, red squirrels, polecat and possibly pine marten. Lots of bird life can also be observed from the hides.

At the end, hopefully around 3.30pm, the centre café is open for the refreshing pot of tea, cream cakes and/or toasted teacakes. The perfect walk for a wild and wet January day, or even a crisp sunny freezing cold icy day ---- be there and be coooool for a great walk early in the millenium.

January 23rd - Dovedale - Duncan Lee

This idyllic valley provides a good winter venue if the weather plays ball with Tissington Spires in particular catching any available sunshine. Classic routes in the area include The Ten Craters of Wisdom (VS 5a**), Silicon (HS 4b**), Caesar (E4 6a**), George (E1 5b ***) and John Peel (HVS 5a***). In the unlikely event of rain the plan is aid climbing in the Doveholes with The Bat (A1) providing a good safe introduction. If anyone has any ets bring them along but I will have enough kit for two teams.

The area also provides excellent walking so any walkers attending can stop and laugh at the climbers in order to get a tick. Fingers crossed for good weather and hopefully I will see you at Milldale carpark at 11am. or earlier at the Whaley cafe; bring your own biscuits

January 29th - 30th - Working Meet - Dave Wylie, Hut Manager

Another millennium(*), another working party.

There will be three lines of attack this time round:

Finish off the painting in the Ladies Washroom and Hall. This will require a couple of people to wield brushes for a few hours. There's nothing technical involved, so if we don't get any suitable volunteers from the club we may have to resort to child labour again.

Continue working under the floors at the dormitory end of the Hut. This is a bit more technical, and we're still pondering exactly how we're going to get some ventilation into the under floor space. We should at least get some insulation in place this time round. Cavers welcome.

Get a few small jobs completed and have a general clean up. We still haven't put up the proposed slate "blackboard" in the front porch; the store room needs a thorough tidy up (as usual); there are a couple of loose slates on the roof at the rear that need attention; the kitchen and hall floors need polishing and an early "Spring Clean" for the whole hut wouldn't go amiss. Again, most of these are non-technical and if we have enough people along then we should be able to get them all done in one day.

The usual rules will apply (assuming that I've survived the intense competition for the role of Hut Manager at the AGM!): i.e. everybody is invited to come along and lend a hand, but please let me know in advance if you are planning to.

Thanks,

(*) Or, for pedants who claim we need to wait till 2001, another year.

ADVANCE WARNING Winter 2000 Andrew Croughton

Okay it's that time of year again.

The clocks have gone back , the nights are getting darker and the only bright light on the horizon is the prospect of lots of white fluffy stuff on the hills.

So now is the time to start looking forward to those Scottish winter meets, and this year I have got two great meets that are not to be missed.

Starting with Roybridge Chris Williamson's annual classic.26/27th February

Chris has doubled booked this year and has asked me to take over for the weekend whilst he is off skiing in France. The usual five star accommodation has been booked and this year could also offer the luxury of a sauna ( as long as building has been completed. ) The places are limited and generally very popular so book early.

Following on from Roybridge will be my own midweek meet at Mill cottage 28/29th February 1/ 2nd March. This new addition to the winter meets list has been chosen in place of the usual CIC meet that has been a bit of a flop over the last few years. Mill cottage has the added advantages of not only giving access to a much wider variety of activities but you don't have to carry all your food for the week up the hill on your back, and you will still have access to transport in order to seek out all that fabulous snow & ice. Again places are limited so to avoid disappointment book early and don't miss out. Hopefully I will have more information and exact prices in the new year, but for those of you who are interested in either meet please let me know as soon as possible as there may be the possibility of extra places if necessary.
