October 2000 Forthcoming Meets
All note the following small print when taking part in meets :-
"I accept that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a risk of personal injury or
death. I am aware of and shall accept these risks and wish to participate in these activities
voluntarily and shall be responsible for my own actions and involvement."
September 23rd - 24th Bowderstone Hut - 12+ places Joe Flynn
An old favorite set in the heart of Borrowdale in the Lakes. Ring Joe to
make a booking. Hurry, just over half the places have already been filled.
Sept 30th - Oct 1st Working Party Meet - Dave Wylie
We're down to one major ongoing project now - the refurbishment of the lower RHS dormitory,
plus improving ventilation in the rest. We plan to finish installing the insulation round the
walls, with wood panelling over the top.
Undoubtedly, various other jobs will come to light - so extra helpers will be needed in
addition to the usual crew. Please contact me nearer the time if you are thinking of coming along.
October 8th Laddow - Ken Beetham
Traditional climbing at a traditional venue. Meet at the car park in Crowden around 9:30am and
help Ken carry up the tea-shop.
October 14th - 15th FRCC Joint Meet - Ty Powdyr - Bob Anderson

boggles)
See you in Wales

proposed route is Brunt Knott Fell, Longsleddale, Gatescarth Pass,
Kentmere Pike, Kentmere, Staveley Head Fell, Brunt Knott Farm. This
walk is about 14 - 15 miles, however it can be cut short if desired,
at a couple of points. It's a good circuit, with varied walking and
good views, taking in two of Lakelands quieter valleys and a couple
of tops. Tea and cake back at Brunt Knott Farm.
Contact me for further information.
November 4th - 5th Ty Powdyr, Bonfire Meet - The KMC
All pyromaniacs welcome as well as some normal souls to keep an eye on
them. If you can bring your old wood and pyrotechnics for the first
social event of the season.
November 12th North Wales Walk - Linda Crossley
Clwydian Hills
10 miles/16 km. This short walk was done a couple of years back, but it's a good one for a
November day. The walk begins in Cilcain (GR177652). This little
village is easily reached from the A541 (the Mold to Denbigh road).
The drive from south Manchester is a little over 1 hour. There's a
car park and loos by the church. Meet in the car park at 9.30am for
a 9.45am start.
These are gentle hills; the highest point is 1818ft/554m. We'll set off NE-ish through
farmland and woods to the open hills. If it's clear, the panoramic
views are good from as far as Snowdonia to Liverpool. We'll head up
Moel Arthur, an ancient hill fort. From there, the walk goes south
along an undulating ridge to Moel Famau. A short descent takes us
back to Cilcain with draught Pedigree awaiting those palates that
appreciate it.
For further details, lifts etc, contact me. I look forward to seeing you.
November 18th - 19th ANNUAL DINNER - Old Dungeon Ghyll - The Committee
The annual dinner is
being held at the ODG this year, on Saturday November 18th. For those
you don't know the hotel - why not? It is superbly situated at the
head of Great Langdale, under the pikes, and has seen a good number
of KMC dinners over the years.
Entertainment:
Our guest speaker is
still being chosen from a short-list of many, but this year we have
been very fortunate to secure the services of Michelle Harvie, who
has taken on the mantle of club raconteur and distributor of
tittle-tattle (see request for ammunition elsewhere in this
newsletter). We will be having the traditional KMC bop to help the
Bread and Butter pudding down.
The cost of the dinner is
£16, which is the actual cost of the meal itself. The committee
has decided that other costs, such as the disco, guest speaker and
other guest rooms and meals, top table wine, etc will be paid by the
club, as they were last year.
Menu:
The committee sat through
many hours of deliberation to narrow the menu down to our allowed
range of selections. I would ask that everyone who books let me know
which starter and main course they would like, to give the Hotel a
good idea of numbers. Desserts can be chosen on the night - selection
yet to decide with the ODG chef. I have also yet to decide on the
vegetarian main course choice with the hotel - shout now if you have
strong preferences.
Starters
- Leek and Potato Soup
- Melon, Orange and Grapefruit Cocktail
- Garlic Mushroom
Main Courses
- Fresh Salmon
- Cajun Beef
- Vegetarian dish
Booking:
All bookings to me, with
full payment and menu choice required to confirm your place(s).
Cheques to be made payable to the KMC, please. Numbers are limited to
70 maximum, so please get in early and avoid disappointment.
Accommodation:
1. ODG HOTEL (TEL
015394-37272, FAX - SAME NO.), GREAT LANGDALE, AMBLESIDE, CUMBRIA.
The hotel has 17 rooms
only, and all of these are reserved for KMC bookings up until the end
of October. There are 2 singles only, then twins, doubles the odd
room with more than 2 beds, and the odd room with en-suite. When I
last spoke to the ODG a couple of weeks ago, they only had 4 rooms
left, so get in there quickly. Hotel costs are £33 per night
B&B.
Bookings should be made directly with the hotel, obviously mentioning that you are with the
KMC so that they will accept them. Friday night is open house, so
again, if you want to book, do it early.
Copies of hotel bumph from me on request, or from them, of course.
BED AND BREAKFAST
Given the unfortunate seasonal closure of the caravan park (we have tried, they can't open
due to NT rules), I have done a bit of research into local B&B's
for those who cant get in the hotel. Note that I haven't reserved any
of these - naturally it is first come, first served, incl other than
KMC'ers.
Stool End Farm (v.close to ODG). Jean Roward has 2 rooms; one double with 2 singles, and
another double with one single. Her strong preference is to let for
both Friday and Saturday nights, both were available when I phoned,
and cost (if 2 nights booked) is £17.50 per night. Tel
015394-37615.
Mrs Taylforth, tel 015394-37364. She is ¾ of a mile down the road, has 2 doubles
and one twin room (I think). Cost is £17 per night, again were
all available when I called.
One of the above gave me
"Robson Place" on 37226 as another possibility - I haven't
called them.
If all the above are
full, I'm sure the local information centre could help.
CAMPING
Adjacent to the hotel.
I am not volunteering to
act as clearing house for accommodation, but if anyone is having real
difficulties, esp re hotel or B&B, I'll try to help if I can.
Mark Garrod.
November 26th Activity Day - Little Hayfield - Julie Johnson
Why not spend the day
based round Kinder? Plenty of self directed activities to choose from
whether you're a fleet footed fell runner; weather watching walker,
bionic biker or a hungry home baked cake eater.
Rich and I will endeavor
to lead a walk leaving at 11:30am from 4 Clough Lane, Little Hayfield
(4th house down from The Lantern Pub). Please park on the
main road.
We will be at home to
"meet and greet" with tea and cakes from 4pm onwards. Feel
free to join us at the beginning or end of the day. There is plenty
of space to leave muddy bikes, boots etc and even a hose pipe to
clean off with.
Any questions see us at
the Annual Dinner or phone us.
December 3rd Mossley Run - Jog - Walk - Cycle? - Jim Symon
Meet at Dovestones car park, Chew Valley at 10:30am. Distance will be around 8 to 10 miles.
