December 2000 Forthcoming Meets
All note the following small print when taking part in meets :-
"I accept that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a risk of personal injury or death. I am aware of and shall accept these risks and wish to participate in these activities voluntarily and shall be responsible for my own actions and involvement."
November 26th Activity Day - Little Hayfield - Julie Johnson
Why not spend the day based round Kinder? Plenty of self directed
activities to choose from whether you're a fleet footed fell runner;
weather watching walker, bionic biker or a hungry home baked cake
eater.
Rich and I will endeavor to lead a walk leaving at 11:30am from 4 Clough
Lane, Little Hayfield (4th house down from The Lantern Pub). Please
park on the main road.
We will be at home to "meet and greet" with tea and cakes from
4pm onwards. Feel free to join us at the beginning or end of the day.
There is plenty of space to leave muddy bikes, boots etc and even a
hose pipe to clean off with.
December 3rd Mossley Run, Jog, Walk, Cycle? - Jim Symon
Meet at Dovestones car park, Chew Valley at 10:30am. Distance will be
around 8 to 10 miles.
December 10th Kettleshulme - Len Stubbs and Mike Graves
The walk will take place from 1 Paddock Close, Kettleshulme.
Directions:
turn off the A6 at the Whaley Bridge turnoff/roundabout, turn right
at the trafic lights in Whaley, direction Macclesfield which leads to
Kettleshulme in aproximatly 2 miles. Please park carefully and don't
obstruct any private drives.
Route:
Kettleshulm - Goyt Valley - Bunsal Cob - Wildmoorstone Brook -
Burbage - Berry Clough - Cat and Fiddle pub - Shining Tor farm - back
to Lens.
As this walk is on my birthday, I am hoping for good weather and a good
turn out. At the request of uncle Iain to make sure that there is a
pub on the walk, and to arrive there between 12 noon and 2pm, this
walk will now be done anti-clockwise, which upsets my navigation.
Arrive before 9:30am for coffee, homemade Bulgarian rakia and 9:45 start.
December 16th - 17th Ty Powdyr, Christmas Bash - John Evans
This will be occurring over the weekend of 16th/17th December at Ty
Powdwr, with food, revelry and capers of various sorts on Saturday
16th. I am organising the food this year, here is an outline of what
I'm planning?
Starter: Leek & Potato Soup
Main Course: Vegetarian Hotpot & various other veg. including Roast
Parsnips & Carrots (and obviously Sprouts) with one or two trimmings.
Dessert: Crumble (probably Plum) with Custard & Brandy Butter.
Also available in all likelihood will be Mulled Wine (of as yet
indeterminate strength). I shall make some Mince Pies as well, but
bringing small amounts of similar stuff would be a good idea for
everyone
If anyone wants meat (or other requests), fine, you can either talk to
me (about what to do with a turkey) or maybe prepare it yourself on
the day. I will need around 7-8 helpers if all is to go smoothly and
will be asking folks in the next couple of weeks.
The cost will be £5.00, and I am already putting names and who's
paid on a list - earlier the better! I'll be in the pub Thursdays
from 23rd November, alternatively e-mail/whatever. If a profit is
made, I thought we could give it to a mountain rescue team perhaps.
See You There!
January 6th - 7th 2001 Glenridding 'At Home' - John and Midge Castick
John and Midge have pleasure in inviting all members to their Silver
Wedding Weekend at 11 Halton Terrace Glenridding.
Saturday will be an alpine ascent of the North face of Helvellyn, Descending
on skis from the summit all the way back to the mines. Sunday will
be another spectacular winter climb in Nethermost Cove and after
breaking through the thick cornice into perfect sunshine we will jump
back over the edge and glissade all the way to Ruthwaite Lodge??..
Anyway, whatever the weather walks will start from the cottage door
at 9.30am both Saturday and Sunday.
A constant supply of soup, tea and cakes will be available throughout
the weekend. Gillside Farm Bunkhouse has been booked, 20 places or
just come for the day. We look forward to seeing as many of you as
possible.
January 13th -14th Ty Powdyr: 2001 Space Oddity - C. Thickett
Star Date:13th - 14th January 2001
Meet, full title: Space Oddity 2001 or How to Avoid Lockwood's Chimney for the Next 100 Years
Space (between his ears) Leader: Chris Thickett
Mission Control: Ty Powdyr
This is a meet for astronauts or climbers or both or neither.
I shall be attempting to walk, scramble and climb during the weekend so
put on your best silver suit and join me down at Ty Powdyr for the
weekend soon after the beginning of the New Millenium - the second in
as many years!.
Following a recent trend, I will lead a sort-of-organised walk or scramble on
the Saturday. One idea is to ascend the Rhyd Ddu route up Snowdon and
return via the Lone Ranger path - so bring your own oxygen. Join the
group or fly your own spaceship.
Stars will be awarded to anyone completing a climb or two.
However, if you intend to blast up the 'L' word climb then count me down and
out.
Definitely no mooning about or even mooning.
January 21st Local(ish) walk, Pendle Hill - John Dobson
Time for the KMC to search for witches - a leisurely winter day walk up
and around Pendle Hill. Meet at 9.30 for a 9.45 start at the Nick of
Pendle car park. (GR771386). Yes, this is the car park at the very
top of the hill, before the road descends to Clitheroe. So I don't
want to be burned-off on the assent again. Directions: Leave M65 at
junction 8, or under M65 at junction 8 if coming up via M66. Head
north on road not marked on your ancient maps, through Padiham
(A6068). After 1 mile turn left through Sabden, and follow road to
top of hill.
January 27th - 28th Ty Powdyr Working Meet - Iain McCallum
Here is a chance to meet the new hut manager and I'm sure all volunteers
will be welcome.
February 4th Arnside & Silverdale Walk - Brian Taylor
Meet at 9.30 am for a 9.45 am start at the car park below Warton Crag
(Grid ref 492723 0S map 97).Although this area might seem a bit tame
for a mountaineering club hopefully the compensation will be a varied
walk of approximately 10 miles over crags, through woodland, nature
reserves and along the coast. The proposed route takes us over Warton
crag, down to Crag Foot, along the coast to Silverdale, up over
Arnside Knot at the dizzy height of 159 metres! (apparently this is a
glorious viewpoint), back past Hawes Water and Leigton Moss and then
back to the car.
Contact me for further information.
February 10th - 11th Glencoe, SMC Alex MacIntyre Memorial Hut - David K. Lygate
The KMC's Winter Glencoe meet is the club's once in a season opportunity
to visit a most incredible & magical area in winter for walking,
climbing & skiing. However, such wonders come at a cost, there
are only sixteen places available. So with the level of interest that
has already been shown (pre-publication), we need the full cost of £7
(cheques payable to the KMC) forwarded to the meet leader as early as
possible to secure your place, or you may be camping on the lochside
with Al.
Scotland in February, will there be snow?
Possible scenarios:
- Plenty of snow & ice - well excellent it's exactly what we are going for.
- Too much snow - (i.e. very high avalanche warning -
SAIS) Go skiing instead, sounds like perfect
conditions for the White Corries or Aonach Mor.
- No snow - Treat this as a summer meet but without the fearsome Scottish Midgy.
- The east coast has better conditions - We are only 1½ hour's
drive from the Cairngorms, if that.
- Totally unbearable conditions all weekend - Go to the Clachaig, the folk
singer should be there on the Saturday night, along with a real
fire, fantastic beers & a good hundred bottles of whisky to
choose from. Or if this does not appeal, then there is always a trip
to the Aluminium Smelter in Kinlochleven to fall back on.
Now that all fears have been banished, back to scenario 1. Glencoe is a
magnificent place in the winter or the summer, but especially in
winter, be it for walking, skiing or climbing. So here are a few of
the local areas of interest.
- The Aonach Eagach
- Stob Coirenan Lochan
- The lost valley
- The Buachaille
- Ben Nevis
- Plus many, many more including the suggestions above & everything
else on the road down south to Glasgow.
I think that all of these areas speak for themselves. So if you are
interested plus have appropriate experience & equipment, then see
me in the pub on any Thursday night, (places are on a first come
first served basis.)
The Alex Mac. Hut is adjacent to the Creag Mhor Hotel in Onich &
accessed from the A82 (Grid ref. 046612, OS sheet 41 - Ben Nevis).
SMC hut guide - "The hut has 16 places, mains electricity &
water, electric & calor gas cookers & heaters; all utensils;
hot water & showers; drying room, with car park at the rear of
the building."
February 11th - 16th Midweek Glencoe Hut Meet - M. Garrod (initially)
A number of people have expressed interest in a mid-week meet in
Scotland this winter, but as yet I haven't decided on, or booked a
hut.
I believe the best way to proceed this time is for the dates to be
fixed (done - see above, follows the Alex Mac hut meet the weekend
before), and for interested people to contact myself initially, so
that I can gauge support and book a hut. Normally there is no great
issue with mid-week bookings, so can let people state their
preferences and try for it.
Deadline for initial interest to be logged is 3rd week January - if little or
no take up by then will not look to book hut.
All those keen to spend time amongst the best winter scenery in Britain -
ring me, Mark Garrod.
March 31st - April 1st Ty Powdyr, Navigation Courses - D.Lee & D.Kenyon
This day course will be run from Ty Powdr on the weekend of March 31st -
April 1st 2001 by Dave Kenyon, A.M.I., a freelance instructor who
regularly instructs at Plas Y Brenin. The course will be a full day
and costs £10 per person with a maximum of ten people per day.
If demand is high enough Dave will run the course on both days of a
weekend. If you are interested contact Duncan by phone, e-mail or down
the pub on a Thursday. The sooner I have an idea of numbers interested
I can make arrangements with Dave.
Is it appropriate that the KMC will be out on the hill on April Fools
Day!
