February 2001 Meet Reports

November 12th North Wales Walk - Clwydian Hills - Linda Crossley

Present: Margaret Baldock, Christine Beeston, Virginia Castick, Sabina Cosulich, Linda Crossley, Andrew Croughton, Dave Dillon, Roger Dyke, Mark Garrod, Michelle Harvie, Sheena Hendrie, Alan (Liv) Jones, Lester Piggot, Phil Ramsbottom, Joan Stewart, Brain Taylor, Chris Thickett, Pete Walker, Margaret Williams, Frank Williams, Keith Williams, Dave Wylie.

Despite this being the wettest autumn on record and floods barring our way, there was a great turnout for what was a more or less dry walk. 67 stiles barred our way through farmland and woods and across streams. We paused for a minute's silence at the eleventh hour, then walked on to the open hills. As we bowled along the ridge to Moel Famau clearish skies afforded fair views. A short descent from the top took us back to Cilcain and an early finish in the pub.

Many thanks to everyone who came.

November 26th Activity Day - Little Hayfield Julie Johnson

Members: Dave Dillon, Andy Croughton, Jim and Judith Symon, Alan (L) Jones, Roger Dyke, Iain McCallum, Rich Johnson, Ken Beetham.

Guest: Nick (did not catch his surname but he had read about the meet on the KMC web site)

Well - although the meet leader herself was only well enough to lead the second activity of the day (tea and home made cakes by the fire) I'm pleased to say her second in command, Rich, led a finr walk heading towards Kinder Downfall.

The wet weather actually improved the quality of this meet as many photos were taken of the Downfall in full (ie upward) flow from a variety of angles and approaches.

Many thanks to Roger for his photos which appeared on the web site the very next day (isn't modern technology amazing!).

January 6th - 7th Glenridding 'At Home' John and Midge Castick

Silver Wedding Meet

Guests: Fay Castick, Michael Whipp, Charles Whipp, Jane Jackson, Lynn Pearn, Kate Spark, Kirsten ?

The Lake District Was most unwelcoming with heavy cloud cover on the main tops on Saturday. We left the cottage and walked directly behind it up the steep hillside onto Sheffield Pike. Jim gave us a salutary warning about dropping litter as Graham tried to hide his errant teabag. We set off to walk around the head of Glencoyne but were stopped in our tracks by a patch of hard snow across the path. The ground is very steep at this point so we teetered gingerly across leaving three to take a safer route back. The views along Ullswater were dramatic despite the threatening rain and after a brief visit to Aira Force we splodged across the fields back to Glenridding. John had spent the day shopping and then cooking three huge cow pies. He was up to his elbows in pastry looking very hot when we returned. Master chef Charles looked on in approval. Sue had made soup and a fruit crumble to add to the feast. The results were delicious. The cottage quickly filled with people and much beer was consumed. The main beer drinkers left to enjoy a cosy night in the nearby Gillside Farm Bunkhouse whilst the rest of us distributed ourselves around our cottage and the neighbour's cottage.

Sunday produced no better weather. Most people walked up to Boardale Hause, along Beda Fell ridge and back along the lakeside path. Jane was uncomplaining despite her raw and bleeding feet. John Evans and crew went rock climbing on nearby Gowbarrow crag and managed a V.Diff which must have been very slippery.

Back at the cottage Fay plied us with soup, crumpets and homemade cake before we all left in a downpour. Thank you to all who came. John and I had a lovely weekend made all the better for your company.
