June 2001 Forthcoming Meets
All note the following small print when taking part in meets :-
"I accept that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a risk of personal injury or death.
I am aware of and shall accept these risks and wish to participate in these activities voluntarily and
shall be responsible for my own actions and involvement."
Some meets may be affected by the restrictions imposed by the Foot and Mouth disease outbreak in the UK.
As information becomes available, details of re-arranged meets will be added to this page.
To make certain a meet is running as advertised, contact the appropriate meet leader before heading out to a meet.
June 3rd - Millstone - Roger Mapleson
Millstone is open (mostly). This is, as most of you will know, is a classic venue with grades to suit most
abilities and some of the longest routes on grit. Routes include, Great Slab (S), The Mall (VS), Great North
Road (HVS) and many more. This is an excellent place to hone your jamming skills and, if you are so inclined,
to practice your aid climbing. Millstone is all of three minutes walk from Surprise View car park near Hathersage.
Check the latest on the BMC site for parking restrictions and, indeed any change in the access situation.
Usual meeting place/gear dumping ground will be used around embankment wall.
The KMC creche will also be in full swing in this spot. Kevin Anderson has nobley volunteered to take on the
responsibilty of Meet Nursery Assistant and all small persons (this does NOT include Sabina, Bridget or Barking)
may be deposited for safe(?) keeping with Kevin for the day. Kevin will be organising "fun" events for the little
ones such as shouting very loudly at the bottom of routes where nervous leaders have just embarked upon the crux moves.
You can retreive yours at the end of the day where they will found suspended from the crag at a convenient point.
Look forward to seeing you from 10ish onwards.
June 10th - Kinder Walk and Climbing - Peter Walker
The original plans for Horseshoe Pass had to be changed due to Foot and Mouth restrictions.
This will be a combined Walking and Climbing meet.
Walkers should gather at the Bowden Bridge car park in Hayfield at 9:30am. The walk will
be round/over/near Kinder Scout. Full details from the meet leader on the day.
Climbers can make their own choice from the crags round the area, though if they don't
see the walkers passing then they may have to contact the meet leader later to claim a
meet "tick"!
June 16th - 17th - Ty Powdyr - Linda Crossley
Check with meet leader
As the hut is now open, this meet should be taking place as planned.
June 24th - Bleaklow: Shining Clough - Chris Williamson
'With the formation of the Karabiner M.C. the crag began to receive attention and many new
climbs were discovered.' - Current Kinder Guide.
This year another, little visited, classic crag with a fair selection of starred routes.
Everything from VD* to E4 6a***. From a personal perspective, the best routes lie in the Severe
to HVS bracket. There a plenty of starred E numbers, too, Duncan!
Try:
- Atherton Brothers Severe **
- Via Principa Severe **
- Monkey Puzzle VS 4b *
- Pisa Direct VS 4c **
- Phoenix Climb VS 4c ***
- Pisa Super Direct HVS 5a ***
- East Rib HVS 5a ***
Last minute F&M outbreaks permitting, all the currently available information states we'll be able
to get to the crag once more! However, if this doesn't prove to be the case, please respect any red
closure signs; as a fall-back on the day, I suggest we regroup at Hobson Moor!
Suggest approach from Glossop by B6105 towards the A628 Woodhead Road. Having passed the sailing club
on Torside Reservoir, the road eventually makes a sharp left bend to cross between Torside and Woodhead
Reservoirs prior to joining the A628. There is limited car parking available at this point. Where possible,
please share lifts to avoid problems. There is also parking at the large (signed?) area on the opposite side
of the road to the sailing club - you'll then have to flog approx 2km up the road on foot.
While it is possible to reach the car parking by approaching directly from the A628, this involves executing
an awkward right hand turn, down a hairpin junction, with lots of heavy lorries flying round your ears.
Occasional bunches of cut flowers and other memorials testify to the wisdom of this strategy.
From the car parking on the sharp bend, the guidebook approach description is a little out of date - the
railway has been replaced by the Trans-Pennine Trial. Cross the trail to gain the track running parallel.
From the railway cottages the guidebook describes two options:
'...a track leads up the hillside to Deer Knowl Rocks. It is possible to follow the moor edge from this crag
to reach Shining Clough Rocks.'
or, remaining with the parallel track?
'Alternatively, the tarmac lane continues eastwards for 1/4 mile until signs for open country are reached'
(these may now have disappeared) 'Follow a path up the hillside, well above the gamekeepers lodge, past a
small pond to the pleasant woods around Shining Clough brook. Strike up the steep left hand side of the clough,
then bear left across the hillside to reach the western end of the crag. Time: 40 minutes from the dam.
The guidebook gives Grid Ref SK 098986 for the crag.
I'll be heading up the hill between 10:30 and 11:00.
Regards, Chris.
June 30th - July 1st - Pembroke - Sheena Hendrie
This Pembroke meet is ON, subject only to weather being suitable to make the
journey worthwhile. The Camp site to be used is definitely St Petrox (grid ref 971976).
A final decision will be made on the Thursday before the meet, when a weather
forecast is available.
This area of Pembroke offers a huge choice from V Diffs to E grades I cannot
contemplate. I originally avoided the Bank Holidays in the hope that although
it is a fair way to travel for a normal weekend, the crags might be a bit quieter.
If there is a change of plan the next most likely choice is the Hut.
Sheena.
July 7th - 8th - Ty Powdwr - Joanne & Vinny Goodwin
The comforts of Ty Powdwr have proved too tempting for the meet leader, so the plan to
camp on Anglesey has fallen by the wayside.
Just turn up at The Hut from Friday onwards. Anglesey is close enough
to the hut that you can still go and climb at Gogarth anyway!
July 15th - The Three Towers (minus one) - Phil Ramsbottom
The original plan to do the Yorkshire Three Peaks has had to be abandoned, with new
outbreaks of of Foot and Mouth near Settle ensuring that the area will remain closed
for some time to come.
As an alternative I thought that the Three Towers would be suitable (i.e. Rivington, Darwen
and Holcombe). Unfortunately Blackburn Council have other ideas and Holcombe Tower cannot
be reached from the West without paying a £5000 fine.
After some exploration and a chat with our local resident (Thanks, Keith) I think I can put
together an interesting route to the first two towers followed by a return over Great Hill.
This should give around fifteen miles, shorter routes will be possible if the weather is too
hot(??) or wet.
Meet at 9:15 for a 9:30 start at the road leading up to Rivington Hall Barn (grid ref SD 628139)
where there is plenty of parking. (From the South take the M61 to junction 6, follow the A6027
towards Horwich, turn left on the A673 for just under 2 miles to a roundabout, turn right about
50 yards past the roundabout - watch for two grey granite posts which are completely out of
place and go between them, follow this for one and a half miles then turn right at the brown
signs).
July 21st - 22nd - Ty Powdyr - Iain McCallum & Derek Seddon
Saturday 21st. July - Snowdonia Walk.
Route Beddgelert to Rhyd-Ddu via East Ridge of Cwm Pennant - Moel Hebog
to Myndd Drws y Coed - Distance about 9 miles. Meet at 9.45am. for 10am. start in the car park in Beddgelert
(GR 589480) near the Royal Goat Hotel - Off A498. Some help with transport between the Hut and
Beddgelert/Rhyd-Ddu may be needed.
Best map - OS Outdoor Leisure 17.
Evening - A hot pot supper (including melon, apple strudel, cheese & biscuits) will be provided at 7.15pm.
Cost £5. A "Veggie alternative" will be available. Please bring your own drinks. If you intend coming on this
meet please let me know whether you will require a "Hotpot supper" or a "Veggie supper".
Bookings to Iain McC. Last orders by 10pm. Thursday 19th. July.
Sunday 22nd July - Climbing and walking.
July 29th - Limestone climbing - Robert Clark
As all the Yorkshire limestone venues are closed, the meet will be at Wild Cat Crags
in Derbyshire. Meet at the crag from 11:00am onwards.
August 5th - Froggatt - Heather Brooke
Just turn up at the crag and look for the crowds in the Todys Wall area.
August 11th - 18th - Lundy - Dave Bone
Sorry to say this meet has been cancelled (perhaps an indirect result of F&M) - due to the Island being
full for the whole of August, whereas last year it wasn't! An offer of space in July doesn't really help
climbers... Another good reason to plan plenty of overseas trips.
Doom & gloom!
