August 2002 Forthcoming Meets
All note the following small print when taking part in meets :-
"I accept that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a risk of personal injury or death.
I am aware of and shall accept these risks and wish to participate in these activities voluntarily and
shall be responsible for my own actions and involvement."
28th July - Climbing, Nether Tor - Dave Dillion
Sunday, 10:30 a.m., Nether Tor, on the southern edge of Kinder Scout.
Park at Edale (bring coins for the machines), start up the pennine
way and then sneak off rightward to the sky line. If, and when,
Nether Tor is climbed out the mystery of Secret Buttress followed by
Upper Tor and Grindsbrook Rocks should keep the interest until
perhaps 11:27. Then it's back down for a refreshing pint of your own
fancy.
Grades - from Mod (4 of 'em) to E6 6b (only one) with 12 starred
VS's. Guide book - Kinder Alleged grid ref - SK 123876, or approx Lat
53deg23'10"n Long 1deg49'w Wet weather alternative - Bring a cagoule.
See you there.
4th August - Lake District Scramble - Zoe Talks
(NOTE - not a weekend meet)
4th August - Classic Lake District Scramble. Patterdale - Pinnacle
Ridge - St, Sunday Crag - Fairfield. Climbers - escape from those
tiny gritstone crags and get up a mountain. Walkers - try a classic
horseshoe with a bit of added spice. Pinnacle Ridge is a fairly
short, but steep, scramble onto the Fairfield ridge (the northern
one, much better than the southern). Optional ghyll scramble descent.
As featured in the current High mag (May). Meet Cow Bridge car park
(GR 404134) near Brothers Water, at 10:00 for a 10:15 start.
10th/11th August- Ty Powdyr - Rob Allen
Everyone knows where the hut is and people generally do their own
thing. So its a 'do what you want' meet and I'll be down the pub the
two Thursdays beforehand.
17th/18th August - Climbing - Robert Clark
Climbing and Camping at Turner Hall Farm, Duddon Valley.
This will be a meet for everyone, with climbing on either low level
or mountain crags, hill walking and camping in one of the quieter
Lake District valley's. This area is in the South West of the Lakes;
you can walk onto the Coniston Hills, or drive a little further to
the Scafells, Pillar, Bowfell and Langdale areas. Crags in the vicinity
include Dow Crag, Esk Buttress, and Wallowbarrow. The campsite is
about 10 minutes walk/2 minutes drive from the village of Seathwaite
and the Newfield Inn.
I hope to see lots of you there - this is the weekend before the Bank
Holiday - so hopefully it will be quiet.
24th/25th August - BH The Lakes, Wasdale Camping - John Evans
N.B. This is a change from the meets list (originally meant to be
31st August), due to the bizarre occurrence of me being invited to a
wedding!
OK folks, Thought the Lakes could be good in the latter part of
summer - of course bearing in mind that rainclouds and isobars may well
already be gathering at the mere mention of a KMC meet in Wasdale...
I am an optimist, however (goes with the job!), and we might just
have a marvellous couple of days. I know it will be busy, so I'm
going to camp at Nether Wasdale (other end of Wastwater from Wasdale
head) near Strands, where pub and shop facilities are good (I'll post
the Grid Ref. on the Website nearer the time).
Although this is a bit further from Scafell, it allows easier access
to Eskdale (quieter crags and walking) and is handy for Buckbarrow:
"South facing at 300m.Often avoids the bad weather of higher
crags"... (100 Classic Climbs - Lake District - Steve Ashton).
If the weather is kind I'll be climbing high up, either on Scafell or
Eskdale, if not lower alternatives will be sought (Michael Fish and his
Met.Office mates allowing). I'm hoping to include a day's walk around
Wastwater:
Starting from Stands go up to Irton Fell, along the top of the
Wastwater Screes to Illgill Head. Thence down to Wasdale head (might
be thirsty!)... Up then into Mosedale, up to Dore Head then steeply
up to Yewbarrow (627m), then down the ridge to Wastwater. Once at the
lakeside one can either stroll back to Strands or the more energetic
can take in Middle Fell and traverse across the top of Buckbarrow
crag and drop down to Strands. (around 13 miles, or 17 for the proper
job).
So hopefully a goodly contingent will make the trip, and fingers
crossed we won't need to discuss ingenious ideas for drying
facilities, or question the usefulness of Social Workers...
31st Aug/1st Sept - Mysterious Welsh Rock - Al Metelko
This weekends 'Mysterious Wales' climbing venues:
Saturday
The Twilight Zone in the Eglwyseg Valley, Clwyd near Llangollen. Parking
in laybys near Plas yn Eglwyseg farm at 216462 OS map 117 (see map below).
Grades from VD to E5, most are in the lower grades.
Sunday
Llanymynech/Carreg y Byg near Oswestry. Parking (Llanymynech) -
from Oswestry heading south towards Welshpool in the village of Pant at
a small cross road, a road leads off to the right. This road is not easy
to locate but is most easily identified by a 'gritstone like' cottage
and a row of 'tennis racket like' bollards on its southern corner. Two
sharp bends and the road ends on a dirt track and a good parking area,
good path leads to the climbing.
I should be there by 10:30am, anyone wishing to share lifts ought to
ring me at the latest 8:30am (Saturday/Sunday). Drive time is around
1 hour 20 min from Manchester.
Hope to see you there.
Al Metelko
8th September - Dovestones/Ravenstones Meet - Viginia Castick
These two classic crags in the Chew valley contain routes of all
standards. In my guide there is nothing above HVS. Long ridge at
Dovestones is 75ft. and a brilliant v.diff. Ravenstones, half a mile
away along the top, also has some long routes. Wedgewood crack at VS
is 70ft and reckoned to be a classic although I've no first hand
knowledge of it. I'll be leaving Dovestones reservoir car park about
10am (there is a charge on Sundays), and walking to the top of
Dovestones edge. I don't reccommend an approach from below. After
lunch I'll saunter across to Ravenstones for more sport. Intend to do
at least one climb on each crag whatever the weather. Be lassic. Be
there
15th September - Peaks Walk - Derek Seddon
HAYFIELD - SNAKE INN - RETURN. About 13 miles
This is what used to be called A GRAND MOORLAND TRAMP. It marks one of the
original contested Peak District paths which was finally secured as a
public Right of Way in 1897. You'll see why it was worth fighting for.
From New Mills: take the A6015. Turn right onto the dual carriageway at
Hayfield, then immediately left. Bear left and then right on to Church
Road. Take the next left fork and follow it into the cul-de-sac by the
River Sett to park (free) at Grid Ref 041 867. Meet at 9.30am for 9.45
start.
Route: White Brow, William Clough to Ashop Clough to Snake Inn. Probably
busy on Sunday, so a packed lunch is advisable. Return via Fair Brook,
Kinder Downfall, down Pennine Way to Kinder Low End, Tunstead and back to
Hayfield.
ALL WELCOME - DO COME - RING ME IF YOU NEED A LIFT
21st/22nd September - Ty Powdyr, Joint Meet with FRCC - Mark Garrod
We have annual joint meets with the Fell and Rock Climbing Club,
alternating between one of their Lakes huts and Ty Powdyr. This year
it's Wales, so please make the effort to come and enjoy the normal
activities on offer, as well as making our FRCC guests welcome. The
law of averages says the weather has got to improve sometime, and
September is always a good bet for sun anyway.
I'm away on hols from Sept 5th till 19th, but will aim to be at the
pub on the evening of the 19th.
See you at the hut.
29th September - Laddow, Traditional Meet - Andrew Croughton
Yet again we will be meeting in the cave at Laddow for cake and
drinks before the usual mad rush to climb all the classic routes of
this meet in the sunshine before the weather changes. But wait this
year we are a week earlier and in a totally different month so could
have even better weather than the normal October sunshine. Meet at
the crag from 10am or 9.30am in the car park to help carry water and
stoves to the crag. See you there and bring your sun cream Andrew.
5th/6th October - Ty Powdyr WORKING MEET - Hut Committee
12th/13th October - The Fell Race, Wayfarers Hut, Langdale - Neville McMillan
20th October - Yorkshire Dales Walk - Iain McCallum
This walk combines the two ridges around Kingsdale. The route climbs
Whernside following the crest of the ridge to the summit before
dropping down to the road at Kingsdale Head. On leaving the road the
route follows a track for a short distance and ascends the hillside
to the top of Green Hill and then along the ridge to Gragareth before
descending into Kingsdale. The walk can easily be extended to take in
Great Coum and Crag hill or shortened to just climbing Whernside.
Start/finish: Twistelton Lane, Kingsdale at the junction with the
Thornton to Dent road ( GR.692760). Parking is rather limited at this
point but it is possible to park alongside the road before reaching
Twistleton Lane at GR. 691758 - in or near a lay-by opposite a small
quarry.
Route:
Twistleton Lane - Scar End- North Green- West Fell - Bruntscar -
Whernside (736m) - High Moss - Foul Moss - Green Hill (626m) -
Gragareth(627m) - Dodson's Hill - Turbury Road - Twistleton Lane.
Distance 12 miles.
Meet at 9.30am for a 9.45am start.
