October 2002 Forthcoming Meets

All note the following small print when taking part in meets :-

"I accept that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a risk of personal injury or death. I am aware of and shall accept these risks and wish to participate in these activities voluntarily and shall be responsible for my own actions and involvement."

12th/13th October - The Annual Fell Race, Langdale - Neville McMillan

LOCATION: Robertson Lamb (Wayfarers) Hut, Raw Head, Langdale (NY 304067)

After the great success of last year's Fell Race, come along to this year's event, and make it a great social weekend. Climbing/walking in Langdale on Saturday, drinking in the New Dungeon Ghyll on Saturday night, to get your head in good condition for the Fell Race on Sunday morning. Attendance by Committee members is compulsory, either to participate, marshal, revive the also-rans, or otherwise provide first-aid.

Last year's generous handicap system enabled a fit young 77-year-old to win, so there is hope for everyone; remember, the more times you participate, the bigger your handicap.

The hut is at Raw Head, on the SOUTH (LEFT) side of the road; car entrance immediately after the hut. 20 places have been reserved; bookings with Neville.

To try to keep death off the road, the start, course, and finish will all be on the north side of the road, but that leaves all the Langdale Pikes to run over. The terrain is more complex on a small scale than you might think, so good navigation, even in good visibility, could make all the difference between winning and losing. If the visibility is bad, there could be scope for endless fun! Come and join in, the more the merrier.

Start times on Sunday: 11.00, 11.30, 12:00. Course posted 10:00am.

Contact Neville for hut bookings, or with offers of help.

20th October - Yorkshire Dales Walk - Iain McCallum

This walk combines the two ridges around Kingsdale. The route climbs Whernside following the crest of the ridge to the summit before dropping down to the road at Kingsdale Head. On leaving the road the route follows a track for a short distance and ascends the hillside to the top of Green Hill and then along the ridge to Gragareth before descending into Kingsdale. The walk can easily be extended to take in Great Coum and Crag hill or shortened to just climbing Whernside.

Start/finish: Twistelton Lane, Kingsdale at the junction with the Thornton to Dent road ( GR.692760). Parking is rather limited at this point but it is possible to park alongside the road before reaching Twistleton Lane at GR. 691758 - in or near a lay-by opposite a small quarry.

Route:
Twistleton Lane - Scar End- North Green- West Fell - Bruntscar - Whernside (736m) - High Moss - Foul Moss - Green Hill (626m) - Gragareth(627m) - Dodson's Hill - Turbury Road - Twistleton Lane. Distance 12 miles.

Meet at 9.30am for a 9.45am start.

Our route is then as follows- Arnfield Low Moor, Ogden Clough, Ormes Moor and onto the Chew Reservoir and Laddow Rocks, the last time I climbed here was with Milly Black and the rest of the club. The walk continues down to Crowden then over to Lad Leap and back to Arnfield Lane. Distance 12 miles.

1st December - Yorkshire Walk - Phil Ramsbottom

This should be a nice short walk starting from Settle, out to Feizor then over to Wharfe and back over Pot Scar/Smearsett Scar before returning along the Ribble.

Meet at 9:45 for a 10:00 prompt start at Stackhouse Lane which is on the right just after the Swimming Pool as you leave Settle heading for Ingleton (GR 814642). There is parking on the lane, or in the centre of Settle (take 3 pounds with you). Eight or so miles, which should get us back in plenty of time for Xmas shopping in Settle.

8th December - Kettleshulme

Traditional meet which starts at Len's at 9.30am. Please park carefully. A walk of around 10 - 12 miles returning back to Len's late afternoon for a snack and a cup of tea. Non-walkers are most welcome.

14th/15th December - Ty Powdyr CHRISTMAS BASH - James Richardson

The Christmas dinner this year will be occurring on the 14th of December at the hut as usual. I will be catering for the usual veterinarian group with my trusty helpers; Wavy, Scumbag and Pink Slips.

Dinner will be £7 this year, I have been wavering about the amount but then so what if I am £2 out it just means that you will all of given £2 this year to the local Mountain Rescue and we all spend enough time there!!

On the Saturday Rick Davis will be leading a climbing group off to somewhere warm and sunny, and someone (possibly Chris Thickett) will be taking a walking party out.

Sunday will involve a mass hung over assent of Idwall Slabs.

I hope to see you all there, please let me know in advance if you plan to attend and give me some money as well.

17th/19th January - McDougall's Cottage - Al Metelko

For the first Scottish meet of the winter we have an exciting new venue, McDougall's cottage near the Bridge of Orchy. The nearest winter/ice climbing is Beinn Udlaidh and the cottage sits below Beinn Dorain and a marvellous circ of 6 Munro's, most above 1000m, for the winter walkers. Combined with the shorter drive from the south and the close proximity of Glencoe and Lochaber should make this a very popular meet.

The cottage (GR 312 373) half way between Bridge of Orchy and Auch, and has gas lighting and cooking, and accommodates 12 people. There is parking for a maximum of three cars, there are no mattresses, and we have to bring our own fuel for heating. See me in the pub on Thursday's and £7 to me ensures a place.
