May 2005 Forthcoming Meets
All note the following small print when taking part in meets :-
"I accept that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a risk of personal injury or death.
I am aware of and shall accept these risks and wish to participate in these activities voluntarily and
shall be responsible for my own actions and involvement."
May 22nd - Wildcat - Sheena Hendrie
This is the Blurb on my meet at Wildcat Crag, Matlock Bath. (See
Peak Limestone South to decipher the following information).
I have it on great authority (from the Sphynx) that the weather on
Sunday May 22nd will be the Catalyst between spring and summer. So I
expect a good turnout on this meet, including attendance from our
resident Manx(man). In Echo(s) of Times Past if Neville and Roger
turn up it could even by The Return of the Old Tigers.
There is a good choice of routes at VS/HVS on this crag - by the
(Golden) Yardstick of limestone crags this a friendly one! Derek's
Dilemna will be to decide on whether to go on Lorna's walk or come
and support the climbers. Jackdaw Grooves and Cougar Cleft are good
starters, but avoid Catastrophe Grooves unless you want a
Cataclysm(ic) experience or are Lobo.
Apart from the bikers on the A6 using up their Nine Lives, the
atmosphere is very pleasant with the cliff west facing. The meet
leader may bring a plentiful supply of Kit-e-Kat(s) in order to
ensure we don't get complaints from any Sourpuss(es). However I'm not
bringing a Singing Kettle - this is not the Laddow meet.
Those from the Lunatic Asylum can climb until the Midnight Sun sets
and if you Recoil in horror from that, Paws for Thought before
settling to sleep with Confused Dreams.
So - turn up or miss out on a Cracker Jack of a meet!
I'll be at the Black Cat area around 10:30 - see you there.
May 28th/30th - Ty-Powdwr Curry Meet - John Evans
That time of year again, when the conditions always seem to be
showery in Snowdonia. Due to not havng gone there on the last two
Spring Bank Holidays on account of rain (Duncan and Colin excepted as
usual!) I'm not even going to mention where I'm hoping to climb
(to avoid of tempting fate...) Suffice to say that on Saturday 28th the
usual curries will be cooked by myself and my glamourous assistants.
For those wishing to partake, it's 2 quid for the food: 4xveg.
curries, popodoms, samosas and rice. Anyone wanting to contribute
will be given high praise free of charge. I'll be at the pub on
Thursday 26th to guage interest levels. With luck much climbing on
certain North-facing cliffs will be possible, and if so I hope to
avoid repeating my superb illustration (last July) of how pendulums
work. I could get a job working inside a big grandfather clock...
June 5th - Sugworth Hall - Mike Graves
The walk will start at Fairholmes visitor centre, SK 172 894 at 9.30
for 9.45 start. Toilets and refreshments are available. Park your
cars on the parking areas on the road side SK 173 890, and walk the
couple hundred to the visitor centre. The route goes across to the
dam and up the steps, then follows the reservoir for about 1km, then
turns right into Walker's Clough,( named after Pete). Climbing up
Green Sitches and onto Bradfield Gate Head. Foulstone Road takes us
down to Strines Bridge where we turn left, and do road walk for a
couple of hundred yds, then turn right for Brogging, crossing under
the dam, and bearing right towards Sugworth Hall, where there should
be a fantastic show of Rhododendrons. The route now follows the road
to the Moscar Cross Road, and picks up the path to Moscar House, soon
after passing through the farm we turn West and head back to
Derwentwater. I have asked for fine weather. The walk is about 11 /12
miles.
June 11th/12th - St David's camping - Michelle Harvie
Come and enjoy a sunny weekend on the quiet crags, coastal path or
dare I say it the beaches of North Pembroke. Plenty of great cliff
climbing of all grades (at least diff to E 1). Beautiful coastal
walks along the Pembrokeshire coastal path, and of course your chance
for extreme swimming and a much sought after place in the KMC
synchronised swimming team!
We will be camping at Carfai Farm campsite, Carfai Bay which has a
big field. Showers and a wash up facility.
Directions - (alternative routes via Bergen available on request for
Colin and Craig) OS North Pembroke GR 760 244 ish.
Head towards Caerfai Bay. Pass Glan y mor campsite on the right hand
side. Cerfai Farm is 100 yards further on the RHS the camping at the
farm is further on, on the LHS. Don't go to bigger Carfai Bay
Camping and Caravan site by mistake.
I plan to book a number of pitches at the site for the group, please
let me know ideally the week before if you plan to come along so I
have good idea of numbers. The Telephone number of the campsite if
you can't find us is 01437 720 548.
June 25th/26th - Pillar/Black Sail Meet - Virginia Castick
The pre booked places at Black Sail Youth Hostel have now been taken but don't let this
stop you coming on the meet. The warden has agreed to let people camp outside the hut and use
the toilets. You may also book a meal at the hut at a cost of £7.50. This is best done
in advance. You may prefer to walk over on Saturday or Sunday from Buttermere or Wasdale or
Ennerdale. I can give you advice on walking times and alternative places to stay if you need it.
This mountain crag has a wealth of routes especially in the middle grades. It also has one of
the best scambles in the Lakes - Slab and Notch climb. For walkers this venue is superb for
ascents of Gable .Pillar and other more remote tops. The meet leader intends to cycle up to
the hut from Ennerdale early on Saturday morning and leave her bike at the Youth Hostel.
It should only take half an hour to walk to the crag from there.
This hostel is unique and a visit should not be missed. The tame sheep came as a particular
surprise when we stayed at the hut last autumn.
July 16th/17th - Ty-Powdwr Family Meet - Sue Marsden
So for this year the plan is again for a walking day and a climbing day.
The walk Capel Curig to Crafnant valley and back again, the tea shop being at start and finish.
The climbing day at Craig Pant Ifan building on the success of last years event...... So I hope for a good turn out.
Let me know about numbers for Saturday night as it will hopefully be partially catered!
July 23rd/24th - Northumberland Walk and Climb - Fiona Roy
I hope you haven't been bribed/bullied into going to too many weddings and "Do"s these
summery weekends! Instead how about coming to Northumberland.
A beautiful, quiet part of the country, good things have been said about it so lets go and see.
I'll be in the pub beforehand if anyone wants a peek at maps and the tome of gnarly climbing
in the area.
Although it's not all gnarly, there are plenty of Diffs and VDiffs for an easy day out.
I reckon it's best to just excercise a bit of selective dyslexia when looking at grades.
e.g. if the guidebook says it's VS it would go at HVS and S would go at HS etc.
But, this is the realm of the proper hard. After all, they say folk in Newcastle don't
need coats on a night out in January!
I'm planning to go exploring on my new bike and would be glad of 2 wheeled company if
that's your bag? The roads are very quiet and I'm hoping to check out Lindisfarne
and other bits on the coast.
Campsite is Highburn House (OS sheet 75, grid reference: 983282) Wooler, A697 off the A1.
Recommended; great views, the showers are hot and the village pubs are only 500m away.
There are footpaths from the campsite into Northumberland National Park, and it's right handy
for Back Bowden and Kyloe.
Here are links to a review of
the campsite and also the
full details about it.
I've passed my driving test so I can offer lifts to any willing victims ... don't
all ask at once! If there's any info I've forgotten get in touch and I'll try
and find out.
November 19th - KMC Annual Dinner 2005 - Sabina Cosulich
This year's annual dinner is going to be held at the Old Hall
Hotel, Buxton. The change in venue from the usual Lake
District/Welsh tradition has been a conscious response from the
committee to suggestions from members on seeking alternative venues
and a result of the increasing difficulties in finding places for
such events.
The committee would like to take this opportunity to ask members for
support and to solicit suggestions for venues for the 2006 KMC annual
dinner.
The address of the hotel is:
The meal will start at approx 7.00pm will cost £20.
Please send cheques (payable to KMC) to Sabina Cosulich.
Details of the menu choices will be circulated nearer the time.
Please let me know if you have any special dietary requirements.
Whilst accommodation at the Old Hall Hotel is expensive (Double/Twin
with bath, £55/pppn), there is plenty of accommodation in Buxton to
cater for all needs, including Hotels, B&Bs and campsites.
I have reserved a few rooms at Grosvenor House, which is just
opposite the Old Hall (room prices ~£27.50-£35pppn). If you are
interested in these rooms, please contact me.
A full list of accommodation in Buxton can be obtained from:
Below are a few suggestions for accommodation within approx 1/2 mile
of the Old Hall (but I suggest a double check with the relevant
Hotel/B&B for actual distance!)
There may be a possibility of organising transport (minibus) from
Manchester. If you are interested, please contact Andrew Croughton.
Look forward to seeing many of you at the dinner.
