September 2005 Forthcoming Meets
All note the following small print when taking part in meets :-
"I accept that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a risk of personal injury or death.
I am aware of and shall accept these risks and wish to participate in these activities voluntarily and
shall be responsible for my own actions and involvement."
September 17th/18th - Salving House, Rosthwaite - Bob Anderson
I have reserved half of the spaces at Salving House for KMC members,
that is 6 male and 5 female. Book with me on a first come first
served basis. All bunks are singles with males and females in
separate dormitories. The hut is situated opposite the village shop
in Rosthwaite with the Scafell hotel about 20 yards away (Grid Ref.
NY 258 148).
I shall be at Rosthwaite to open the hut by 6:30pm on the Friday
evening. Weather for weekend guaranteed!
Bob Anderson
September 24th/25th - Borders Rock - Dave Bone
And now for something adventurous and a bit different. Just over the
Border in Scotland from Berwick on Tweed we have the "Fast Castle"
coastal area near St. Abb's. Taking a look in the Lowland Outcrops
guide you'll find some greywacke sea cliffs with a good mix of grades
and stars. There are fins like Sharpnose and a sea stack, the Souter.
To add to the adventure, there are even one or two scottish VS's here
too. I haven't been here before but always interested in somewhere
new. Should be something for everyone to play at.
Typical access is from Dowlaw farm (GR857702 on 1:50000 No. 67) -
probably starting from here on Saturday Morning (perhaps having
driven up same day). Sunday can be more of the same or if people have
had enough, we can move back across the border to some Northumbrian
rock (which is the poor weather alternative). Camping is more
problematic - most are static caravan sites and it is not clear at
present whether they really take tents (or if you'd want to stay
there!). Though I do know a good site in Wooler, back in England?
Contact me before the trip for final details - this had to be written
well in advance due to being out of the country at the critical time.
October 1st/2nd - Working Meet - James Richardson
Come along and help with maintenance and cleaning at the hut.
Accommodation free for the weekend and you Sunday off to go
climbing/walking.
October 8th/9th - KMC Fell Race Weekend - Neville McMillan
LOCATION: Irish Row (Yorkshire MC Hut), Coppermines Valley, Coniston, SS 293 984.
It's back to Irish Row. So those who can remember the navigational
challenges of four years ago, will know what is in store. Those who
can't, or weren't there, had better ask Mark Ashley.
On Saturday it is climbing - traditionally on Dow Crag, though there
are many crags around Coppermines Valley, and there is Hodge Close
Quarry for the E2 Lakeland slate afficionados. Alternatively some may
take a sneaky walk, hoping to guess where the course will be. As
usual, the Fell Race is on Sunday. Attendance by Committee members is
compulsory, either to participate, marshall, revive the also-rans, or
feed the hungry with bread and soup.
The idiosyncratic handicap system works to a secret formula that gets
tweaked every year. But the more times you participate (without
winning), the bigger your handicap next year. Trophies for fastest
male, fastest female, Shelagh Manning handicap, and the Concordia
Trophy, but only for KMC members. Guests can participate for the
sheer hell of it!
Approaching Coniston from the N, along the A593, turn R immediately
before the Black Bull pub. After 1/4 mile the track goes L steeply and
the surface deteriorates. Take care to avoid immovable boulders,
especially if arriving in the dark on Friday night. Continue along
the track towards the youth hostel. Irish Row is the line of cottages
directly above the small footbridge on the R. Park responsibly; there
is off-track parking on the L, 50 yds or so beyond the footbridge.
There are around 25 hut places, but please book ahead with Neville
(£6 pp/pn) especially for Saturday night. Please note that to be on
this meet, you must participate in the fell race, either as a runner,
marshall, or official kitchen staff! The course will start and end at
the hut. Course details will be posted on Sunday morning at 10.00 am.
Start times (three groups) will be 11.00, 11.30, and 12.00 noon.
Contact Neville to make hut bookings, for further information, or with
offers of help.
October 16th - Laddow - Christine Beeston
Hopefully we'll have some autumn sunshine for this traditional tea, cake
and climbing meet. I'll be serving tea and cake from the cave at Laddow
from around 10am, rain or shine - please bring some water for the kettle
if you come. If you haven't been before, Laddow is at SE057015 on the Dark
Peak map. The easiest approach is via the Pennine Way from the car park
at Crowden on the A628. If you need/can offer lifts, let me know and I
will try to arrange things.
October 22nd/23rd - Borrowdale Scrambling - Midge Castick
This will be a camping meet based at "Mrs Weirs" campsite GR256139.
That's the one beyond Rosthwaite village, just after the turn to Stonethwaite.
Varied scrambles on Saturday all of which weather dependent but hope to finish on
Scafell Pike. For those just coming on Sunday we'll leave the campsite at 10.30am
and head off up Langstrath to climb Cam Crag Ridge, then cross over the vague top of
Rosthwaite Fell for an explore of Doves Nest crag in Combe Gill.
October 30th - Wild Wales Walk - Dave Bone
This is a Sunday only meet taking in some less well-known hills in
Wales with good views over Snowdonia and mid-Wales. It is based in
the Berwyn range east of Bala and will add some interesting,
hopefully for you, extensions to the better known main summits. There
is some rough and wet going, and a bit of road?
You will need the OS 1:50000 map 125 (Bala) for the walk. You will
also advised to take a headtorch because you will likely finish in
the dark! The Lanes around here are narrow with little opportunity
for parking for a number of cars, hence the walk cannot start out in
the 'wilds' but from the village of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant (GR
124261). Drive to Wrexham and continue past Oswestry, turning R at
Llynclys on the A495, continuing on the B4396 and B4580. Find
somewhere to park in the village and meet on the main road in front
of the church at the village centre for a 10am start (travel time
from S Manchester ~1.5hr).
Distance: about 15miles or 12 if going slowly, and ~1150/1050m total
ascent. The initial stretch out of the village could be on road or
obscure tracks (just because a path is marked on the map doesn't mean
it exists on the ground) depending on conditions and speed on the day.
Route: Tyn-y-fridd (phonebox at 116308), Mynydd Tarw, Bwlch Maen
Gwynedd (col), optional bag of Cadair Bronwen, Cadair Berwyn, Moel
Sych, head of Pistyll Rhaeadr (waterfall), If the party is on time, W
then S to Post Gwyn and E along the high ground - across the head
of Craig y Mwm if not, Glan-hafon, farm track to NE, and return along
track and road (easy) to the starting point.
I would be grateful if you let me know if you are coming and how many
cars there are. I should be in the Pub beforehand when I hope to
organise some car shuffling. In case of a repeat of inclement
weather, contact me as any low level walk might have to start from a
different point this time round.
November 13th - Staffordshire Bouldering - Duncan Lee
The plan is a tour of bouldering areas along the Skyline at The Roaches starting at
Doxey's Pool around 11am and then moving along the edge to The Very Far Boulders.
There are problems of all grades so bring a friend, bring a mat if possible and just
remember whatever the weather the Hartington IPA in The Travellers Rest is a must.
