May 2007 Forthcoming Meets
All note the following small print when taking part in meets :-
"I accept that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a risk of personal injury or death.
I am aware of and shall accept these risks and wish to participate in these activities voluntarily and
shall be responsible for my own actions and involvement."
May 13th - South Pennines Walk - Mike Graves
Today's walk will start at The Lord Raglan pub G.R. SD 809152 at
Nangreaves. 9.30 for 10 am start. Directions: M60 to M66 come off
Junction 1 bearing left onto A56, left at the next set of lights and
follow to the Lord Raglan.
Our route will take us from the car park we walk N.E. to Throstle
Hill and then onto Harden Moor, walking due East to arrive at Lower
Lumb Mill (ruins).
Crossing the road at Cheesden Bridge, we head off to Paradise GR
827174. From Paradise we take the Rossendale Way to Black Hill onto
Cowpe Moss, then return to Higher Hill, Cheesden Edge and the
Ashworth Moor Reservoir.
Local paths will bring us back to the Lord Raglan, for a pint of
their real ale!
Distance 11/12 miles.
May 19th/20th - The 3 Peaks Walk Meet - Michelle Harvie
Note change from June date!
Make the most of the long spring days and come and take the proper 3
Peaks challenge. The challenge will start early on Saturday ~8.00 am.
The next 11 - 12 hours will be spent climbing Penyghent (694m),
Whernside (736m) and Ingleborough (723m) ~ 25 miles and 1,672 metres
of ascent & descent (the direct route across the moors from Penyghent
towards Whernside is a tad soft underfoot. Ed.). In case you are
wondering, I am planning to walk the route, though any keen runners
would be welcome to race ahead. The early start should mean we get
back to Horton in Ribblesdale in time for liquid and other
refreshments most likely in the Golden Lion pub. Sunday can be spent
recovering, maybe some entertaining climbing on the nearish Rylestone
rocks.
We will be camping at Holme Farm campsite in Horton in Ribbledale I
have provisionally booked 6 pitches. If you are planning to come
along please let me know as the site does get busy at this time of
year. The site is in the middle of Horton in Ribblesdale near the
post office OS sheet 98 GR 807 726. The site has showers and toilets
.Costs are £2.00 per tent + 2.00 per car + £ 2.00 per person per
night. Those who have taken the challenge should get a good night's
sleep.
May 26th/28th - Cornwall - Dave Bish
OK you rufty tufty types - tents out for one of those barbecue packed
seaside weekends (ah - remember Gibraltar Farm last year?).
This time It's a long weekend in Cornwall and yes I know it is a
drive but it WILL be worth it - almost all routes mentioned below are
three stars, short walk ins and great for photos to scare your mum
with! We are staying at Trevedra farm just above Sennen Cove which
puts it sand-between-the-toes walking distance from the quality
evening/short day crag of Sennen (lots of excellent low grade routes
including the awesomely photogenic Demo Route HS 4b).
We will begin the climbing exploits at Bosigran on Saturday (a mass
ascent of Commando Ridge VD will aquaint the visitor with sea spray
and local atmosphere before maybe moving on to something even more
thrilling like Black Slab Diff, more character building like Doorpost
HS 4b or more Chilling like Bow Wall E2 5b).
On Sunday we pop South to Chair ladder for a wealth of stars and
mixed grade routes at the bottom of the abseils to the sea (no need
to via Ash Can Gully: Ed). The worlds most scary V.Diff - terrier's
tooth awaits aspirant leaders (in fact its so hard its now HS but
then so is everything in Cornwall more or less!) but for the full
Chair Ladder tick you have to do something with an ecclesiastical
name such as Diocese VS 5a or Bishops Rib E1 5b.
On Monday we'll mop up a few routes on Sennen and make a sandcastle
or two on the beach before heading back - those keen for a final
thrill should either go surfing or check out the Right Angle HS 4b
behind the Gurnard's head pub/seafood restaurant on the road home.
Camping costs £4.50 per night per person plus £1 per tent, transport
will cost a bit more but let's all get together and share some cars
as the drive is going to clock up some carbon - I will collect anyone
who gets the train to Penzance! (eat your heart our Anderson's
Taxis). Early arrivals can just use my name on the booking and they'll
show you where pitch up -
www.cornwall-online.co.uk/trevedra/. Don't forget to pack a Barbie!
June 2nd/3rd - Ty Powdyr Working Party - HMG/James Richardson
We will be cleaning out ditches on this meet and could do with 4+
strapping lads/lasses to pound away at slate.
There will also be other tasks to do for those not so adept with a
pick-axe. I could do with a couple more than usual though please.
While on the subject of hut work?
WeOU
Wavy recently spent an entire gloriously sunny weekend in the loft of
the hut painting the wood with wood worm treatment. He seems no more
deranged than usual after this experience but I am sure each member
of the KMC would still like to buy him a drink next time they see him.
June 10th - Stanage Popular End - Heather Brooke
Please note change of date.
The current plan is to meet at Mississippi Buttress area at about
10am for a fun filled day of Gritstone climbing.
June 17th - Millstone Edge - Dave Dillon
Due to a typo in my part the meet will be at Millstone, time 10:00,
just above Hathersage. Trains on Sunday from Manchester Piccadilly at
08:09 pass Stockport at 08:19 and get to Hathersage at 08:56. Last
return to Stockport and Piccadilly leaves at 22:16. However, the
timetables start anew on the 20th May. So it may all change.
If you choose to use a car, make sure it's full of people and park it
next to the ice cream van. The van should be located in the Surprise
view car park on the A625, it's round the bend, on the flat, after
rising out of Hathersage for 2 km. I imagine the car park will
involve money.
There is quite a bit to do there, all types and scariness, all types
of grade. Bring sandwiches and sun cream.
Contact me for lifts, etc.
June 23rd/24th - Ullswater Meet, or the "Lakes Fours" - Midge Castick
A further update on this exciting meet. Camp at Gillside Farm (GR382168).
On Saturday the meet leader promises a grand tour of Helvellyn to include
four swims. Red Tarn to be swum, then warm up on Swirral edge followed by
a jaunt along the tops and down to Grizedale Tarn for the second swim.
A short ascent over Fairfield and Hart Crag leads to a pleasant stroll
down the beautiful Dovedale Valley. The longest swim of 500m across
Brotherswater is the next target, then walk through Hartsop and along to
the lakeside to Side Farm (teashop!). Follow the track a bit northwards
until we can gain access to the lakeside. An easy swim across the narrowest
bit of the lake, with an island halfway to rest on, will take us straight
to Glenridding half a mile from the campsite. This is a total distance of
12 miles(ish) Wetsuits are a good idea. There are no brownie points to be
gained from becoming hypothermic. Non swimming supporters and bag carriers
will be most welcome. On Sunday if anyone has the strength left, the plan
is to climb on Eagle Crag in Grisedale.
June 30th/July 1st - Kinder North - James Richardson
Meet underneath Chinese Wall at 11pm on 30th June. Climbing will
occur on Chinese Buttress and then Misty Wall on Saturday. On Sunday
we will climb further along Ashop Edge. I plan to Bivi on top of
Kinder on Saturday night so bring some sleeping kit, dinner and a
bottle or 2 of wine.
Please note that plans may change depending on weather and/or midges.
July 7th/8th - Langdale - Joe Flynn
17 hut places available at £4 per night. Make sure you book your
place early, and fill the venue.
July 21st/29th - The Bregaglia, Switzerland/Italy - Duncan Lee
The plan is to camp at the excellent, cheap and friendly 'Camping
Mulina' at Vicosoprano in Switzerland, a great base for exploring the
surrounding area. I will be there on the dates shown but there is no
reason why this 'meet' can't roll on for 2 to 3 weeks as long as
people support it. I have chosen this area because it has a great mix
of alpine routes from long North face classics on the Piz Badille &
Cengalo to the non-serious bolted routes around Albinga Cirque. Some
of these are a mere 5 minutes from the cable car, range from severe
upwards and lead to exceedingly pointy summits such as the much
photographed 'Le Fiamma'.
The walking in the area is also good, especially as the scenery has
not been desecrated by the ravages of the ski industry. Valley
cragging is also abundant just over the border in Italia around the
historic town of Chiavenna and the bouldering mecca of Val d'Mello is
also near by (lots of good routes as well!).
If you are interested in attending the meet let me know.
