July 2007 Forthcoming Meets
All note the following small print when taking part in meets :-
"I accept that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a risk of personal injury or death.
I am aware of and shall accept these risks and wish to participate in these activities voluntarily and
shall be responsible for my own actions and involvement."
July 14th/15th - Meet Cancelled - Trish Cranston
Due to a decision to go a week early in the direction of Bregaglia
with Wavey, I will be unable to run my meet on 14th and 15th
July, so it is cancelled unless anyone wishes to take it or swap: I could do a
later meet instead. My greatest apologies, Trish
July 21st/29th - The Bregaglia, Switzerland/Italy - Duncan Lee
Lots of people have expressed an interest in attending this meet from
a broad spectrum of the clubs membership so fingers crossed it will
be a good fun week of glorious weather that enables us all to get
lots done in the mountains.
If all goes to plan I will arrive at the Vicosoprano campsite
in the late afternoon/early evening of the 21st and after drinking some medicinal wine to aid recovery
from the journey, I will take it from there.
See you in Switzerland. Or for the less adventurous, Giggleswick in October.
July 22nd - Shining Clough - Sheena Hendrie
It seems that the meet leader will be in Bregaglia this weekend...
I'll recommend the crag anyway - some of the best long gritstone
routes in the peak are here. The rock is pretty clean and the walk up
isn't so bad, if you get the right line. Ed.
August 4th/5th - Dow Crag wild camp & climb - Roger Daley
The Crag: The situation for this wild camp is truly atmospheric. Dow
crag is comprised of five main buttresses with extensive scree slopes
sweeping down to the steely blue depths of Goat's Water; it has an
excellent range of mountain routes with grades that will entice all.
Situation: Camping on level ground 100 metres SW of Goat's Water,
above Coniston village.
Map: Explorer OL6
Grid reference: 265 974
Access: From Coniston village a road leads uphill opposite the petrol
station (signposted Walna Scar track) to an even steeper section.
Follow this for 1.5 kilometres, where the metalled road becomes a
track. Through the gate and park your car. Follow the direct
continuation for 2 kilometres, passing through two rocky 'gateways'
to a large cairn, which marks the junction with the path to Goat's
Water track. Walk rightwards up the steep grassy bank and after 1.5
kilometres the tarn is reached. Up to the left is level ground,
suitable for camping.
Approach time: 1hr 15mins.
Travel: People are likely to travel up either Friday night, or
Saturday morning, please get in touch to sort out car sharing etc.
August 11th/12th - Two Crags Meet - Dave Dillon
Saturday on Cratcliffe Tor, Sunday on Chatsworth Edge with an option
on staying at the Eric Byne camp site on Saturday night.
Cratcliffe Tor (SK 228623) is south east facing (sun trap), dries
quickly and has a modicum of routes at most grades, whilst Chatworth
Edge (SK 275720) is north facing (heaven on a hot day), probably
doesn't dry as quick but has more routes to temp.
The optional Eric Byne camp site over half a kilometre walk up hill
above the Robin Hood Inn on the A619. It is very basic with cold
water and a toilet. Bring ear plugs if it turns out to be Duke of
Edinburgh weekend. Costs £2.50 per person.
August 19th - Five Trigs Walk - Keith Williams
This is the definitive Pennine bog trot: high, wet and glorious if
the weather is kind. Just wet and full of interesting navigation if
not. For me, this area will always be associated with a nonchalant
Len Stubbs in black plimsolls.
The five tops are as follows:
| 1. Alphin (469m) | SE 003.028 |
| 2. Unnamed top (541m) | SE 046.012 |
| 3. Black Hill (582m) | SE 077.046 |
| 4. West Nab (500m) | SE 077.088 |
| 5. Broadstone Hill (454m) | SE 021.069 |
So long as you start and finish at the Alderman's Hill car park (SE
017.045 - off the A635) and convince the meet leader that you've
visited all 5 tops, you'll get a tick. Do them in any order that
takes your fancy . . . Meet at 9.00am for 9.15 departure.
The 1:25K OS map 'The Dark Peak' has been known to be a useful guide
over the 18-odd miles which it can be reduced to with careful
navigation.
August 25th/27th (BH) - Pembroke - Dan O'Brien
St Petrox Campsite.
This weekend will be very popular if the weather is good and thus it
may be worth booking your pitch. Call me to reserve
spaces. The crags in South Pembroke will be easily accessible and
the Northern crags will require a short drive. Heather and I will be
there on the Friday evening (probably in the St Govans Inn
Bosherston) and probably climbing somewhere like Mowing Word on the
Saturday.
Hope to see everyone there.
September 1st/2nd - South Cairngorm Weekend Decathlon - Ian Crook
| Drive | From Manchester to Tomintoul. |
| Bike | From Tomintoul along Glen Avon to the bottom of Garbh Coire (Bheinn a Bhuird). |
| Bivvy | At the base of Garbh Coire. |
| Walk | Up Garbh Coire. |
| Climb | A route of your choice. |
| Bivvy | In Garbh Coire. |
| Climb | Another route? |
| Walk | Back to Glen Avon. |
| Bike | Back to Tomintoul. |
| Drive | Home. |
I've booked the weather well in advance for this meet so there should
be no last minute let downs.
Please note that sleeping in a tent is not bivvying (Al Metelko) and
I'll only give half a tick to people who use tents. Please contact me
to maximise the sharing of transport.
September 8th/9th - Malham Camping - Vicky Alderton
The weekend plan is fabulous sunshine, lots of climbing of the
limestone and gritstone variety - so something for everyone, good
company, fine beer and camping! Camping will be at Town Head Farm in
Malham, located on the outskirts of the village on the way to the
cove. I'll be arriving at the campsite early Saturday and will be
climbing on the left wing of Malham from 11 onwards. Please let me
know if you intend to camp so I can book places.
Saturday
When you think of Malham the first thing that springs to mind is hard
routes, well actually, very hard routes! This is certainly true but
for the slightly less 'gnarly climbers' there's still loads to go at.
Out on the left wing there's everything from VD to extremes with
starred routes like Flake Wall, S and Crazy Paving, VS all worth a
go. The right wing also offers amenable grades and is particularly
good for the VS to HVS leader with lots of 3 star routes to be found.
Saturday night will most likely be spent in the very good, local pub.
Sunday
Climbing at Rylstone, just a short drive from Malham. Should be
there, at the aptly named Warm up Buttress, from about 11 (ish!). I
can't say a lot about Rylstone as I've never been but it looks good
in the guide! [Look out for the Yorkshire P grades! Ed.]
20th/21st October - KMC Fell Race weekend - Neville McMillan
LOCATION: Irish Row (Yorkshire MC Hut), Coppermines Valley, Coniston, SS 293984.
Here's advance notice of this key event in the KMC calendar, and it's
definitely based on Coniston this year. Put it in your diaries and
don't miss it! You have all summer (what summer?) to train for it.
Climbing or walking on Saturday; the Fell Race on Sunday. The course
is still a mystery, but it is bound to be within 20 miles of the hut.
Trophies for fastest male, fastest female, Shelagh Manning handicap,
and the Concordia Trophy, but only for KMC members. Guests can
participate for the sheer hell of it!
This will be the last time I organise the KMC Fell Race, so make sure
you are in it.

Dinner Details
The Festivities
Some may wish to escape Manchester (or elsewhere for those outside
the M60) early on Friday and take advantage of the excellent offer on
accommodation for the night (meals available in the bar). This will
put them on the spot for a foray to the nearby Castell Cidwm for some
historic cragging (Dwm or Glwm anyone?) alternatively a gentle day
discovering dragon's lairs or Arthurian lore may suit some. [or some
Chimney sweeping?]
On the night itself our guest speaker is yet to be revealed, but
preparations for a traditional KMC evening entertainment have begun.
Anyone with a thespian bent would do well to contact Chris Thicket or
Katie Horgan with suggestions or offers! Negotiations have also begun
with several "award winning" breweries for a special KMC brew or
blend (the sticking point is bespoke labels for bottles so if anyone
knows anyone who can do that kind of thing?).
Due to the hotel not wishing to upset local residents Andy has agreed
on behalf of the club that non-residents will leave by 11:30pm. This
will allow us to have the bar open much later for reminiscence or two
over a pint or three. Really with the excellent price we have
negotiated for the night I hope as many people as possible will opt
to stay at the hotel itself and do the thing properly.
Sunday breakfast could give way to a gentle exploration of Craig Llan
direct from the hotel, there is a pleasant trail up past the Sygun
copper mines which returns down through the old (soon to be
re-opened) railway tunnels (bring a headtorch) and back along the
"fisherman's trail" to the tourist tick of Gelert's grave. A leader
for this wonderful walk is sought - please contact Dave Bish or
Heather.
The alternative stiffer plod is Snowdon via the Watkin path (again
you can start from the hotel) - surprising new views and ridges for
those used to being on the pass side of the hill.
Naturally some will opt for a crag - something with a more modern
feel or will it be Cwm Silyn?
Your Menu
The Chef at the Goat hotel has promised us a four course meal
selection, we can incorporate some final requests from anyone who
finds the spread arrayed below too limited (Vegan option suggestions
anyone?) but for the time being the four course menu is as follows:
Starters
Homemade Veg Broth
Oven baked Brie in filo Pastry with cranberry sauce
Creamy Mushrooms
Main Courses
Roast Lamb shank in Garlic and redcurrant sauce.
Half Roast Chicken with trimmings.
Grilled Fillet of Plaice in creamy sauce.
Savoury filled pancake glazed with goats cheese.
All the above will be with spuds and seasonal veg of the day.
Deserts
Fruit cobbler and cream
Chocolate terrine and fruit coulis
Ice cream trio
..and finally
Coffee and mints.
So once the final menu is agreed I will be taking orders of who would
like what to ensure smooth service on the night. So far no-one has
suggested taking orders for breakfast on the Sunday but if last year
at the ODG was anything to go by it might not be a bad idea!
