July 2008 Forthcoming Meets

All note the following small print when taking part in meets :-

"I accept that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a risk of personal injury or death. I am aware of and shall accept these risks and wish to participate in these activities voluntarily and shall be responsible for my own actions and involvement."

July 12th/13th - North Devon Climbing - Mark Garrod

It's a long way to go, but we have aimed for the weekend before the main holidays to minimise traffic and maximise the sun and warmth. The climbing at Baggy Point is the main focus of the weekend, along with the requisite sea dips (with you know who), and campsite socialising as ever. I have not yet managed to check the tides, so I'm not sure whether the low tide routes will be accessible am or pm, but there is plenty of light to catch them at some point. Anyone who fancies surfing is also is the right place. For those who want to extend the stay, Lundy is just over the water.

The plan is to base ourselves in Croyde to have easy access to both sea and Baggy point. The campsites here are somewhat pricey; £13 per night per night per person plus £3 for a car, and you need to book for both weekend nights, to stay at Mitchum's village campsite, where we intend being. Rules abound in all campsites around here; this one only allows 2-3 man smallish tents, not frame tents or equivalent, and doesn't allow camper-vans or pets. Please contact me with definite bookings 3 weeks before the weekend, and I will book the site, otherwise please book direct or take your chance. Campsite grid ref is 441397, directions are get to Croyde whichever way you want, then take Jones Hill off the B3231 going north toward Putsborough for 200m, then turn left on Moor lane which heads out toward Baggy point. The campsite is a short way (100-200m) along Moor lane. E-mail is guy@croydebay.co.uk, telephone is 07875-406473.

Saturday will definitely be climbing on Baggy point as the main focus. Sunday can be more flexible, with some (limited) potential for other climbing in the area, although Baggy point should keep most people happy for 2 days.

Please contact me if you are thinking of, or definitely, coming.

July 19th/20th - Family Meet (Ty Powder) - Bridget Mapleson

Some may view this as a public service warning but KMC family meet will be as usual at Ty Powder 19th/20th July. On Saturday 19th a possible stroll along the Nantlle ridge such that by the afternoon when the sun is in the shining one can enjoy the pond under Cwm Silyn. Parking of a car or two at each end would allow the walk to be in the area of 6 miles long with a bit of up and down. The beginning of the walk should start from grid reference 566525 where there is lay-by parking on/near the right hand bend as you go from Rhyd Ddu at about 10:30. If the weather is badly off the mark (i.e. likely to cause serious aversion to future hill walking/climbing) maybe a coastal walk will be in order.

If acceptable we could celebrate a successful walk with a communal dinner at the hut. Please let me know if you would like to join in. I will look for some suitable climbing on Sunday along the lines of friendly crag, shortish walk-in, a stream/pond to paddle in, sun etc. All people most welcome, Bridget.

Sunday July 27th - Yorkshire Gritstone - Heather Brooke

Will be heading to Almscliff for this year's meet. With a short walk in and lots of routes to choose from, it seems like a great choice. Hoping to arrive about 10.30, meeting at Great Western buttress. Hope to see lots of people there.

August 2nd/3rd - Stanage - Climb & Camp - Chris Williams

How can the KMC calendar be complete without a meet at Stanage, "the finest of all the gritstone edges by quite a margin in a setting of unrivalled grandeur" (Rockfax). Yes I know on August weekends it will be heaving with budding climbers and the midges will be queuing up for a bite or two, or three... but will that deter us? No never! I will be at the North Lees Camp Site on Friday evening and will bring along a barbeque. Just come with whatever you would like to burn and something to wash it down with.

Saturday should be less busy especially in the morning so I plan to be at High Neb from 10am. at the latest. There are lots of excellent climbs here with star routes at grades from VDiff to VS plus way beyond for the adventurous ones. High Neb is best approached from Dennis Knoll car park for those arriving on the day.

Sunday the plan is to be at Crow Chin from around 10 a.m. hoping to avoid the worst of the crowds. Here again there is a good selection of star routes from VDiff upwards. Later on we could move onto Marble Wall for a few more serious routes!

Camping at North Lees can be busy at this time of year so it is strongly recommended that you book yourself a place well in advance.

The details are:

North Lees Campsite
Birley Lane
Hathersage
Derbyshire S32 1BR

Tel: 01433 650 838

The facilities are excellent and is within easy walking distance of all the crags as well as pubs etc. in Hathersage. Bring plenty of midge repellent!

August 9th/10th - No Official Meet

This weekend was originally billed as a Coniston Wild Camp. However, for various reasons, it now looks like there will not be an official Club meet this weekend.

August 10th/23rd - Ailefroide - Duncan Lee, Vicky Alderton, Roger and Bridget Mapleson

So there will be four members present at least...

We plan to camp at Ailefroide on the south side of the Ecrin Massif. The campsite is large and well equipped and has an entire guidebook of rock climbs (F3- 8A, 1 - 14 pitch) on perfect granite within walking distance. If you choose to venture up into the surrounding higher mountains these include the Barre des Ecrin (4101m), Mont Pelvoux (3943m) and the small but perfectly formed Pointe des Cineastes amongst others. There is also lots more rock climbing on limestone down the valley as well as mountain biking, a via ferrata and lots of good walking. All that and the fact that the area generally gets better weather than the Mont Blanc massif combine to make Ailefroide a great base from which to launch Alpine adventures.

So let us know if you want more information or plan to come along so we can keep an eye open for your arrival seeing as the campsite is very spread out and mobile phone reception was non-existent 2 years ago

August 30th/31st - Ty Powder Walking Meet - Peter Walker

Assuming most people will be climbing if the weather is ok, I have some suggestions for the minority. I could drive 4 people to Beddgelert to traverse Snowdon back to the hut and take anybody back later who has walked the other way. Similar arrangements could be made for a Pen y Gwryd -hut walk. For anyone who does not mind going further afield I have reccied a pleasant 13 miler, part of the Lleyn coastal path from Aberdaron, very interesting but a long way there and back. Anyone interested, please phone me.

September 6th/7th - Wasdale Camping - Sue Harkness

Camping at Church Stile Farm, Nether Wasdale Grid ref. 126042. Tel.: 01946 726252, Website: www.churchstile.com, BOOKING RECOMMENDED.

There will be plenty of activity and choice for both climbers and walkers. Meet leader is planning walks both days, one from the campsite and one from the top of Wastwater. All invited for what is sure to be an enjoyable meet in spectacular scenery in the warm autumn sunshine.

SAT 6th, plan is to meet at car park, Brackenclose, top end of Wastwater at 9.45am for prompt start at 10.00am. The route will take in elements of the Mosedale Horseshoe: Black Sail Pass, across the ridge to Pillar, Red Pike and back to the start. Possibility of variation depending upon weather. Hope to see you there.

September 13th/14th - Welsh Mountain Meet - Vicky Alderton

The plan for the weekend is to stay at the hut ready for a mass assault on Tryfan on Saturday, come rain or shine. Hopefully the sun will be playing ball, so I'll be starting on Milestone Buttress and climbing my way to the top. Tryfan offers classic climbs at all grades from VD upwards and there's also plenty of scope for walking or scrambling to the summit - whatever takes your fancy. If you're heading down on Saturday morning then we'll be starting from the car park at 10:30. Sunday's plan is there is no plan. Hope to see you there.

Saturday October 11th - KMC Fell Race (Peak District) - Roger Mapleson

Course planners, Roger Mapleson, Craig Marsden.

Hospitality, Sabina Cosulich.

This traditional KMC meet will take place once again this year but with a new organiser and a new venue. Neville's events of recent years have been excellent and are a hard act to follow and I intend to retain many of the characteristics that have been a feature of Neville's courses. But there will also be some new features to the event.

There is a change of venue for 2008 and this year Sabina has very kindly offered her new home at Long Lee, Rowarth as the event centre. Post race food will be on offer here and a night's accommodation in the barn allowing you to relax after the run and contemplate further activity the following day.

If you have not taken part in the fell race before and haven't considered it on the basis that fell running is not your thing, then please think again. The course will be such that it can completed at a walk within a reasonable time and it will rely on competent navigation and careful route choice as much as outright speed over rough ground. The first of these two elements will of course be second nature to any member of the KMC. So just because you might not run, doesn't mean it's not for you and that you wouldn't be competitive. There have been many occasions when the speediest competitor has failed to win.

Further details will emerge in the next newsletter and on the day but here are the essential elements of the event. From the start of the course each participant will navigate from checkpoint to checkpoint and from the last checkpoint to the finish. Maps will be provided with checkpoint locations at the start. Participants will require a compass and appropriate kit for a day in the hills.

See the next newsletter for more details in the meantime give Roger Mapleson a ring if you have any other queries.
