November 2008 Forthcoming Meets
All note the following small print when taking part in meets :-
"I accept that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a risk of personal injury or death.
I am aware of and shall accept these risks and wish to participate in these activities voluntarily and
shall be responsible for my own actions and involvement."
November 16th - Ramsbottom Walk - Phil Ramsbottom
This was intended to be a walk around Holcombe Hill, unfortunately
Frank chose to do exactly the same walk in April so I have been
forced to rethink.
What I have come up with is a tour around Scout Moor (dodging the
wind towers as much as possible).
Meet at Ashworth Moor Reservoir at SD833157 at 9.15 for a 9:30 start.
The route is intended to be: across the moor to join the Coal Road
leading to Whittle Hill (wave to Mrs Thickett), across to Cowpe Low,
Rossendale Way to Top Leach (trig point). Then South along Rooley
Moor road before turning West across the moor to the North End of the
Greenbooth Reservoirs. Before climbing up to Knowle Hill and back to
the cars. That should give three trig points and 12 miles.
So far I haven't checked the route, hopefully I will do so before the
day, if not I am hopeful that a well known local door mouse will act
as a guide.
Best Map - Outdoor Leisure 21 - South Pennines.
November 23rd - Lathkill Dale Walk - Brian Taylor
Meet at pay and display car park Grid Ref 194 645 OS Map Sheet 119
for a 10am start. (As an alternative you can park at layby on right
of road from Parsley Hay near fork in road, 50 - 100 yards before pay
and display car park).
Walk is approx 10 miles, initially we cross fields in a north
westerly direction towards Calling Low. From there we cross Cales
Dale before dropping to the head of Lathkill Dale. It is then an
interesting descent down the dale beside the River Lathkill (on the
left hand side). If you had been here in the early summer you would
have seen plenty of spring flowers! Time permitting we will make a
slight detour for a pint at the Inn at Over Haddon. We then rejoin
the river down as far as Alport and then we turn up the River
Bradford. Initially we are the south side of the river but we then
cross over to the north side as we pass Youlgreave, it's then back
over a bridge to the south side before crossing back over the river,
downstream of Middleton, for a return to the cars.
Saturday November 29th - Black Rocks - Richard Yorke
This meet will probably take the form of a walk rather than climbing due to
the predicted rain, but bring your gear just in case. Plan is to meet at 10am
at the car park spot on the B5036 outside of Cromford on the way to
Wirksworth (it's the same spot as recommended for the crag in most
guidebooks).
After a brief visit to the crag to take in the atmosphere and history of the
place we'll set off on the high peak trail past Harborough Rocks and then
across the debryshire dales to Winster for a pint and something to eat.
(Option to stop short at pub in Grangemill should the weather be truly
awful). From there we'll head back to Cromford across Bonsall Moor to
Bonsall and then through Middleton and back to the car park.
Hope to see you there.
December 7th - Peak District Walk - Jim Gregson
IN FOOTSTEPS OF LEN STUBBS.
Founder Member Len Stubbs had a comprehensive knowledge of the Peak
so this walk will revisit some classic ground he would have covered
many times. To add some interest and challenge, the meet info. is
being presented in the form of a Grid Reference trail - a sort of
walker's sudoku. You have to join up the dots and visit all the
relevant grid squares in the correct order, up, down, sideways or
diagonally to complete the walk. You may not ask the Meet Leader for
further information - except at a cost of 50p forfeit per request
(proceeds to go into Hut funds!).
Map required: OS Explorer OL1 Dark Peak or BMC Dark Peak.
Headtorch/Food & Drink also advised. Meet at 0900 for prompt start at
0930.
STARTPOINT (for car parking) in HAYFIELD at Grid Ref SK041867. If you
can't find this quiet spot you could begin at Bowden Bridge quarry
carpark and work out how to link with the rest of the route from
there.
Head E, SE then S to 053862, going uphill S then W to050853. Along
flank of "Hunger Hill" (not its real name!) turning to reach "North
Foot" (see above!) at 062846. Aim ENE to NE over wet ground, later
joining the yellow brick road swinging N then NW to gate at 081861.
Turn E and go down all the obvious rungs to possible rest stop under
cover at 096855. Onwards - don't get left behind - to stile at 102853
where turn L to go N. Regain all lost height, and a lot more, by long
sporting scramble as close to main watercourse as flow levels on the
day allow.
All being well, arrive with relief at 095873 through splendid scenery
(if visible!). Pause for breath - and regirding of loins for the
black challenge of the next 3 kilometres, heading generally NW - you
need to definitely find the reassuring portals at 088887 then go with
the flow (literally!) all the way to the "Brink" at 083889.
Difficulty in completing this section by a good line (not easy in
hill fog) could leave you floundering in a slough of despond until
after dark - or even longer (bring plenty of 50p pieces!).
Resist urge to throw self over the "Brink" - eat and drink instead -
then head off NW to vantage point at 071893. Choice of ways from here
- weather, condition of body and time of day will influence decision.
Fit and eager? - if so, continue NW on moral high ground to 064901
then turn SSW to 060886. Flagging and seeking relief? - from vantage
point turn SW and go thankfully downhill directly to 060886.
From this point, obvious track takes you down and down, valleywards,
some tarmac, passing hallowed ground of Trespass Meeting 049869. Jink
across bridge and pass water at PC if required. Parallel river back
to start point. Think of young Len Stubbs storming this route in his
prime.
Sorry, no Kettleshulme homecoming this year - sustenance possibly
available in a Hayfield establishment.
NB - Daylight hours are short in December so you are advised not to
saunter if coming - a purposeful KMC approach will repay the effort.
Approx. map distance 20 km. Everybody welcome, hope to see you on the
day.
December 13th/14th - Christmas Bash - The Committee
There will be the usual seasonal festivities at the Hut this weekend.
The evening meal on Saturday is £6.00 per person.
We are looking for volunteers to cook a good variety of dishes for
the evening's meal.
Thinking a nice meal (with lots of opinions) would include something
like:
- 2 soups (1 veggie, please).
- 6 main dishes (at least 2 veggie options).
- 6 desserts.
Can people volunteering for cooking duty please contact Heather
Brooke ASAP (Please by the end of November) so that we can organise
everything in lots of time.
If you hoping to attend, please also contact the above so we can have
an idea of numbers expected.
Hope to see lots of people there ?
January 11th - Forest of Bowland Walk - Dave Bone
After a long break from meets and perhaps not too much activity,
something is needed on the Calendar. So here is a circuit in the
Forest of Bowland, offering a bit of a mixture, wild untamed
moorland, boggy moorland as it used to be, track, woods and
riverside. Even a bit of Climbing if you want it.
Start point: Car park in Abbeystead (GR564543 on Landranger 102).
From junction 33 on the M6, turn left (south) onto the A6 and 1/4mi
fork left following signs for the Trough and Dolphinholme. Left,
under the railway bridge, 2nd left and straight on (ignore the Trough
now) into and through Dolphinholme (2nd right at the mini-roundabout
confusion). Past the school in Abbeystead, over the river and
immediately turn right through the wooden gated (open) road. Small
carpark on the right so share cars as much as possible.
Route: Follow the Wyre Way Eastwards along the riverbank to the road
at 583537. An unfortunate quick mile along the road to Tower Lodge,
then up unto the White Moor at 602546. Turn right on the
ex-permissive path (now Access Land) and find a way via the knoll of
Miller's House to Brennand Great Hill. With more signs of a path head
north to the main ridge fence line where a right turn is made for the
rocky top of Wolfhole Crag, 527m. This is apparently the furthest
gritstone crag from the road in the UK, there are ~8 routes to 9m.
For collectors of such notable tops, an RAF Anson crashed here in
February 1944.
After a break, head west for the main path at Brown Syke (Dark brown
that is), where shorter walk option 1 heads for Tarnbrook (easy after
1st half mile), and the KMC route tackles the peat en-route for the
Ward's Stone, highest point of the Bowland (560/1m). After this the
going is easier westwards, and a search for a track at 564588 should
see us storming downhill past Grizedale Head to rejoin the road. At
Lee Bridge, take a footpath to Abbystead school and the carpark.
Total distance 13mi/21km, ~400m ascent. Start time 10am (remember a
headtorch in case).
January 17th/18th - Joint Meet with Craven MC at Ty Pwdwr - Katie Horgan
Wild Walks, Frosty Fell Runs and Cold Climbs - depending on the
weather. For those with their climbing heads on, there are long
routes all over the place. David's coming too, so he'll have some
bright ideas. On a similar note, there'll be running going on,
including some Bob Graham training for anyone who wants to stretch
their legs and try keeping up with himself. I'm planning to run(!)
up Snowdon on Saturday - probably up the Miner's and down the Tourist
path. Crib Goch or the Horshoe would be a good bet for anyone
wanting to walk. In the vain hope that January does its thing, I
guess something icy might be 'in' - Parsley Fern, Sergeant's Gully?
But I doubt it! Join us for cold days out and mulled wine and
crumble in.
January 25th - Yorkshire Limestone - Duncan Lee
Yorkshire Limestone - Pot Scar (GR. SD795678).
Being quick drying and catching all the sun that is going this
excellent little crag has as good a chance as any of being climbable
at this time of year. If that is the case it is home to a good
selection of routes from diff to E3 with the best of the bunch being
in the VS - E1 range.
If that's not the case it's in a lovely spot that is well worth a
visit and has a fantastic cafe adjacent to the very limited parking
spot in the hamlet of Feizor. In fact the slices of home-made cake
may actually be bigger than the parking area so car sharing is
essential!
If the weather is kind to us I plan to be at the crag by 11am by
which time the sun will have had a chance to take the chill off the
rock. If the weather is bad I will be sat in the cafe sampling the
cakes whilst contemplating a short walk (or waddle in Vicky's case)
around some of the other crags in the area, or an attempt at "The
duck squeezer's route" (F4+). Who can resist a climb with such a
silly name? Not me, that's for sure. So "set Feizors to stun" and
give me a ring if you plan to come along so I can try to co-ordinate
car sharing.
March 7th/8th - FRCC Joint Meet - Chris Thickett
I will run a joint meet with the FRCC on the weekend of 7/8 March
2009 at Salving House in Borrowdale. I have confirmed the date with
the FRCC Meets Secretary and will book half the hut places for KMC
members in the near future.
