Lapland ski touring Hut to Hut

Matt W

Imagine this: rolling hills covered in immaculate layer of snow. Evergreen trees branches bending under thick cover of snow. Cold biting you face, but you're nice tucked in warm cloths, sitting on a fallen tree, wrapped in a sleeping bag, holding a cup of hot chocolate. And right Infront of you a beautiful spectacle of green, yellow, purple and pink! Aurora borealis in it's full display!

Sounds good, doesn't it? So let's go to Lapland and experience this in person.

Flying on Saturday, 21/02/2026. From Manchester to Ivaloo (connection in Helsinki). From the airport we will make our way to village of Saariselka, right on the verge of Urho Kekkonen national park. On Sunday, we will be organising equipment, last shopping etc and setting off fo a ski touring trip. Making our way through the national park, and staying overnight in one of the many huts in the area. The huts are very basic, but all have a wood stove or a fireplace. They are on a first come first served basis, so we must be prepared to tent out. Also, need to bring food for the full duration, as there are no shops.

On a Friday, we'd make our way back to Saariselka. Spending the Saturday to return hired equipment, thaw out our bodies in sauna and generally to chill. The return flights are on Sunday, 1/03/2026, the same route Ivaloo - Helsinki, Helsinki - Manchester.

This trip will be on a touring skis, so basic skills will be required. That said, the terrain is rather easy.

The aurora borealis forecast is especially good for this season, as the peak in soalr activity cycle is due in between 2025-2026.

Who's ready for na adventure?
